New Deviantart filenames

:iconphotometheus:
Photometheus Featured By Owner Oct 31, 2018  Hobbyist Photographer
So I just noticed that the filenames for downloaded images have changed from ARTNAME_ARTISTNAME_hash.jpg to file.jfif
What was the reason for this?
This is such a major step backwards, I really hope the admins will reconsider it and bring back the old naming format.

Hello Photometheus,

We greatly appreciate your use of our forums, but I'm afraid that your thread here would be better directed towards the DeviantArt Customer Service Center.

Unlike some communities the DeviantArt forums are not a place to receive official help and information; our forums are more of an informal hang out and place to have conversations so it's unlikely that your thread will be seen by anyone who could help out in any official manner so I'm going to redirect you and close your thread here since the customer service representatives will be helping you out instead.

We hope that you get the assistance you need and we'll see you back in the forums later!

This is annoying. I like my files to actually have the same name as what I originally gave them.
Instead of cure_tej_by_purpleamhariccoffee-2e5t1hio it'll just say "file" - how the hell am I supposed to tell the difference when I redownload them (obviously after accidentally deleting the original file)?! I'm far too lazy to rename the image as I save them! :coffee: V2

I wonder if this is also why image thumbnails are weirdly sized in my messages?

It's happening intermittently to me too.  Infuriating.  :(

the new filenames break every kind of grouping !  Artists go to great lengths to mark files being part of a series - and all is broken up now in favor of random letter sequences!

It seems DA wants to prevent us from downloading...

I think the goal here was to kill hotlinking the images from other sites, and I can understand that. But I see no reason why the filenames need to get destroyed in the process.

Y'know I can actually see how it'd be a good thing, since people have such trouble finding the artists of the art they repost. At least be there'll be no excuse there.

Edit, misread because I'm a dumbass. If they're changing *from* the title_artistname etc format, I absolutely cannot understand the reason behind it, jfc.

Not sure if this is connected to the bizarre name change problem, but i noticed that on all the images that I have had this happen to, the download was rerouted through wixmp.

Pretty sure it's related, they seem to be changing the way the files are stored and delivered.

Can't say I like the new system much... it has some major deficiencies.

Not the least of which is that if you download images, the fact that wixmp renames them means it quickly becomes impossible to keep track of the artists related to each image.

Yeah, like now you have to go out of your way to fill that info in yourself. :/ At the end of the day it's the artists who'll suffer from this.

and now yet another strange situation arises.... i just attempted to download an image, and received a pop-up telling me I need a username and password to download from this site.  I checked the Wixmp website, and it says that the service is currently free but will transition to a pay site.  Unless i misunderstood the way it was stated, artists will have to pay to have their images served on the site, and apparently, anyone who wants to download images will need an account.

I would like to see an explanation from the admins at deviantart.  As it stands, it appears that deviantart is planning to use the artwork to generate revenue, by means other than advertising.

I rather think dA has to pay them to use their service, not the artists. It's a business decision to use some external storage host rather then service their own hardware but I speculate they will lose users (like me) if they keep up their file naming.

You are probably right, but it has been my experience that whenever a service provider makes a decision to incur additional expenses, one of the first considerations is how to offload the new expenses to the end user. This tends to be true both in the real world and online.

I agree with you regarding the file renaming... most of the artists on here put at least some thought into naming their pictures, so it is irritating to have some third party negate that effort.

maybe it's an issue with the browser you're using? (dA stopped supporting it?) or could be a random bug...

Definitely not, this is a fundamental change with how DA handles the files.

It seems to be happening with some of the uploads and not the others, I think they're gradually applying those changes to all the files, check that pic I posted in the other comment.

Well that's funny, 'cause I uploaded something 18 hours ago as of this comment and it still follows the "ARTNAME_ARTISTNAME_hash.fileformat" template.

I checked that, along with viewing files from my DA inbox...

So far, it's pretty much a 50/50 thing, as the time/date of upload doesn't seem to factor in how the files are renamed.

Using right click and "save image as" on Chrome:
on the picture's page results in "morning_sun_by_pauladarwinkel_dcqt57s-fullview.jpg"
on the download page results in "file.jpg"

I mainly download with the first method so I haven't got that issue, interesting

The right click method doesn't give you the original full-res files.
