Manipulating Vectors in After Effects

I'm starting a 3D Animation course this semester, and we're using After Effects CS6 for the projects. To do the idea I came up with for my first project, I need to know if this it's possible:

What I want to do is start the animation with a theatre curtain that I'm making in Illustrator being pulled open. Is it possible to move different groups of paths independently of each other in After Effects, or should I individually create the image's segments as their own files and put them together in the composition?

The link doesn't work, as it apparently is either on a crashed server or is a virus. Evidently they've changed their domain for that to include an "x" after help. Weird. Unfortunately, Adobe was the first place I went, and I came up with little to help me.

Reason being is because I used https:// instead of http://

This one should get you there without hassle.

(https// is just a tiny bit more secure when web browsing, that's all. I get the same "block" when using Chrome, just proceed.)
