Finding an SD card's root directory is tricky...

I'm looking for the root directory on an SD card when inserting it into a MacOSX system. When doing so I get a prompted message telling me I have no images on it. Nothing happens after that. I have to manually go into finder to access the card. But I think I miss the root directory by doing that.
Ideas? I'm trying to update firmware for my camera with instructions to copy it into the root.

When you select any external drive in the Finder's sidebar, you always go to the root of the drive...

Then in that case, better question: Why is my camera not taking the new firmware? It will display the following text:
Memory card containing firmware is required to update.

So what are the instructions to update the firmware? Maybe it needs to be in a weird folder, or something.

Maybe you can upgrade somehow without the card? Plug it into the computer via its cable?

1)download the firmware from the canon site (which I did)
2)Copy firmware to the root directory on SD card (which as far as I can tell from your description I've done)
3)Switch camera's mode dial to P and insert SD card then switch on
4)go to the menu and select "Firmware"
5)hit a dead end
