Can't Do "Restore To Factory Settings"

:iconspiritjujuhari:
I heard I need to locate a file called "factory.wim" but I can't find it. I have no disc to boot from and I've tried the command prompt thing to activate it, it just says, "the system cannot find the path specified". OTL I don't see "Factory Restore" anywhere in the system repair options. I don't have a "tools" folder either.

yeah that probably wouldn't do anything.

Ok I'll try those.

It's just that I can't access, the system restore factory settings option there, and now the "repair my computer" won't even launch.

Um, I don't have Sony Vaio, I have Dell Inspiron and not Windows 7, Windows Vista. I can't recover the factory settings because it won't work. I can't find the "factory.wim" file I need and I don't have any recovery discs.

Ah ok well I tried cleaning that. I can take it out and clean out the portion around it.

Recover your factory settings if you run into problems with your Sony Vaio computer running the Windows 7 operating system. Recovering the factory settings will resolve problems with missing system file that have made your operating system unstable. Recovering the computer's factory settings will also permanently remove any viruses that have become buried on the computer's hard drive. You can access the recovery program from within Windows 7, while booting up your computer or using the recovery discs. ..

no it wouldn't be the motherboard, it would be the disk drive. Or where it connects.

Things you could try:
In device manager, find your CD/DVD drive, uninstall it and restart the computer. Windows should then reinstall the device driver for you, (or you can click install driver to do it).
Malware scan: Quick scan with SuperAntispyware free [link] is a very fast and thorough scanner (set it to not start with Windows in the settings).
Ccleaner: [link] another free app, good for cleaning the Windows registry (Use the 'Registry' tab).
-if the problem persists, it's probably a problem with the hardware itself rather than Windows like ~Davos-Moon suggested.

Anyway, you probably already went through this... but the procedure to restore a Dell Inspiron to factory defaults is to press the F8 key when you see the Dell logo at startup. It will take you to the advanced boot menu options, which include 'Repair your Computer'. Select that option and enter your password if asked, then you will see a list of options like 'system restore' and 'command prompt'. The last option says 'Dell PC restore', or something similar. Select that option and follow the instructions on the screen.

could be something with the internal connections, but that's just a stab in the dark, I'm really not sure.

I tried cleaning it, and it's like the disc spins when I put it in but then the comp freezes.
