Core 2 Quad, still a very good chip and I regret selling mine (QC6600) which if memory serves correct was 2.3GHz. Technology moves forward but the gains haven't been that great....
An '08 Mac Pro, with a GTX 560 Ti and 10 GB RAM inside, running the OS on a 128GB SSD and a bunch of harddrives.
My keyboard is a stock Apple Numpad keyboard, but I play games with a Nostromo and black Deathadder. They're okay.
My headset is a Sony XB500 with a little mod to hook a headset mic on the ear

If I already own a computer, Linux is pretty much guaranteed to work on it. OS X is a lot pickier about what hardware you're using, which is why there are a lot of hackintosh guides online. So I guess it depends how much you want to deal with troubleshooting.
If I was building a new computer, I'd personally want to build a hackintosh because I'm not afraid of going inside computers (despite using Macs), the challenge interests me, and I like and use the OS enough to justify wanting to go through with it. And if I ever do get tired of OS X, I can always put another OS on it, but it could be harder to put OSX on a Linux rig, depending on hardware.
