Best graphics design pad?

I'm trying to get back in the market for a new machine to do graphic design on. My last baby was a Macbook Pro with PS, but I'm hearing there are some monster pads out there that would be more efficient. If at all possible, I'm looking for a pad that I can use a pen on as if it's a tablet...but I want to paint ON the screen. Also, I don't want crap. I'll spend the money, I NEED quality.

Any suggestions of pads/software collaboration would be greatly appreciated.

If you are interested in quality I think that you should just buy a Cintiq and work on it with your MacBook. I use it with both my pc and MacBook Air and I find it more useful then painting directly on stuff like iPads or those new touch notebooks, because this way it's like having two monitors and you can observe your work from two points of view.
