Gaming router recommendation

With my old CRT television, other people in the house could use the Wii to watch shows on Netflix, and this never caused a problem with my online gaming. But now that we have an HD plasma screen with Netflix built-in, it always wants to stream an HD picture when that's available and the lag is horrible. (We don't have conventional TV service. It all comes in off the Internet connection, or from DVD or Blu-ray.)

My DSL connection Speedtests at about 4.5-4.8 Mbps out of a possible maximum of 6.0, which is probably borderline for HD video. I'm going to do what I can to squeeze out more speed: A dedicated data line off a POTS/DSL splitter and perhaps upgrade my modem if my ISP thinks it'll help, but that will take me a week or two. In the meantime I'd like to get a router that can do a good job prioritizing packets from my game. MMOs don't use all that much bandwidth, of course, but latency is a killer.

The TV does NOT lag atm, except perhaps at the beginning of a feed, but I really don't care if it does. I pay for everything in the house, and I want my goddamn game at the end of the day.

Any specific recommendations? I'd be particularly grateful if someone had direct experience with a situation like this.

uhh if you're looking for something that can act as a switch, anything modernish by CISCO I would suggest.

why not disable the app (or just not be signed in) on the new HD tv and just go back to using ur WII to watch netflix? That would make it so it wont try to pull hd when watching netflix unless there is enough bandwidth... i dont know how the app is on the wii but if there is a never go hd mode that'd be helpful as well...

however like others have said.. ur internet speed is lacking a bit so any kind of pull will throw a rock into ur latency... its not your router... ive been using an old linksys for years but my speeds are lik 25mbps so i dont every have problems using anything... QoS settings and all that jazz never really worked for me in the past

anyhoo... gL with this =)

That's a plan, yes, but I don't think anyone will be all that open to it.

I'm not saying that the router is the cause of the problem, only that I ought to be able to partially solve it via the router. In that case I would expect some degradation of the TV image, or perhaps it will lag a little. (I think Netflix interleaves their signal though, so with a low-bandwidth condition you'll just get a lower quality picture.) I'm OK with that for the time being.

Thank you, though!

I pay for the electricity to run the TV and the computers and the gaming consoles; I pay for the landline and ISP; I paid for all the equipment including the computers and the TV and the gaming consoles and the routers and modems that everyone else in the house gets to use for free.

DAMN STRAIGHT it's all about me.

A practical solution would be to invite me over and break out all the carb-free snacks while we watch a marathon of My Little Pony: Friendship is magic.

I don't see how this could go amiss.

You don't need a good router, just one that can be flashed to DD-WRT. Your own router right now might be capable right now actually, or you could easily find one for less than $40.

Hmm. I may well have one that will work with this. Thank you!
