And in addition to everything already said, hold down ctrl if you only want to copy the screenshot, not take one and have it save somewhere.

In addition to someone else saying Cmd+Shift+3, if you want to take a screenshot of a selected area, do Cmd+Shift+4 and click and drag the mouse over the area you want to screenshot.
