750W power supply - is that necessary for this build?

:iconmaskedguardian:
I'm working on a pc build, and it's my first one, so a friend of mine gave me a list of parts that he recommended I use. But one thing caught my attention, and that was the power supply. I know it wouldn't be using 750W all the time, but it makes me question what the average power use of this thing would be. Any advice on this situation? Here's the build:

ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Z77 ATX Intel Motherboard
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO Universal CPU Cooler
Intel Core i7 3770K 3.5GHz LGA 1155 Processor
Corsair Vengeance Series 8GB DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) CL10 Desktop Memory Module
EVGA 025-P3-1579-AR NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 HD 2560MB GDDR5 PCIe 2.0 x16 Video Card
Sony AD-7280S-0B 24x SATA Internal DVD Burner - OEM
Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7,200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive STBD2000101
And the power supply:
PCZ Technology ZT Series 750 Watt Modular ATX Power Supply

efficiency is great and all... but bottom line you have to think about load.

What are you building this computer for? How often will you be stressing the 'puter?

The psu is the heart beat of your computer... you have to have a dependable psu like pyro said... and the psu itself isnt whats really loud ( yes it plays a part cuz of the fan) but in majority its the other fans in the case. Do you have a big *** fan on ur case? How many fans? etc.

I looked at ur cpu cooler and it looks like my dark knight and its not that loud... but i have an antec 900 case with a 200mm fan ontop and that makes it kinda loud.

all in all i think if you get a 750 watt cpu you "should" be fine cuz i have the i7 930 1st gen oc'd to 3.5 ghz and two 6770's xfired on a 850 watt corsair psu with no problems and the 2nd gen sandy bridge should be using "less" pwr... anyway hope that helps

Yeah... I think you really want about a 650 or so

To answer your question: average power usage should be right around 400-500 somewhere in there.

It's not a big deal if your PSU is rated a little too high. It won't be as efficient, but really, it's not like you're burning children to run the computer. Electricity isn't all that much money.

Yeah, I found that out, but even so, just knowing that I would be using more than normal kind of bugs me.

I mean, you're talking like marginal amounts of electricity here. If you were buying like a 1500W psu then yes, you would care. You're not though.

What you really want to be concerned with is getting a high-quality PSU that actually has the power it claims. Plus, if you want to overclock or add a second graphics card, more HDDs, you know you're going to want more RAM, and anything else in the future you want the higher rated PSU.

Newer power supplies you're talking like, a drop from 90% to 87%. You should probably go with the 750.

Also, that OCZ has had some terrible reviews about being too loud and having bad connectors. If I were you, I would be buying [link] because you can move it from computer to computer as you upgrade and build new computers. If cost is really an issue I would still buy [link] over the OCZ

Oh wow, thanks for the heads-up. Definitely don't want a noisy computer.

by the way the 80PLUS certifications will tell you that they're rated for high efficiency: [link]
