I'm trying for my Maya Autodesk Teaching Certification soon, so I decided to start a forum to answer and see what questions people are having with the program. I'm starting work my own online tutorial series that will be up soon.

My main focus in the program is Modeling, Scripting, and Rigging, but I'm comfortable with all aspects of Maya.

I am still trying to learn Maya after having spent a lot of time in Cinema 4D, so forgive me if my terminology is not quite right. Despite several months of trying to learn the software, I am still very much at what you would call beginner level.

I used to do a lot of polygonal modeling in C4D using what my professor called ';paint the points' method. That is, to create a Polygon Object which could accept numerous unrelated vertices. Within any PO, you could use the Bridge tool to connect between vertices and form polygons. Is there such a tool/process within Maya, and how does it work?

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated, whether in the form of a direct answer or even a link to an appropriate tutorial/resource. Thank you for posting this thread and offering your assistance.

Sorry, forgot to preview first. That was supposed to be paint the points method, not a smiley.

If I'm understanding this correctly there are a couple ways to do this in Maya. Many of Maya's tools are set to recognize edges instead of verts.

First to make both objects into one polygon you have to select both shapes and combine them (Polygon Menu set>Mesh>Combine)

Once they are technically one mesh in Maya you have a couple of ways to connect faces. There is a bridge tool in Maya [link] You select the edge you want to bridge then click bridge.

There is also Append to Poly [link] Which doesn't give you a divisions option but is quite a bit quicker.

There is also the create polygon tool where you could use "v" to snap to the verts, combine all shapes, and merge the verts that overlap.

Yes I think this answers my question perfectly. I will try this the next time I have the program available, but for now I think your description makes sense.

Good luck with your certification, but it sounds like you will make a fantastic instructor :). Thank you so much for taking the time to help me!

Hey, no problem. I'm glad I could help.

If you have any other questions, comments, or ideas I'd be happy to hear them. I'm working on a couple tutorial series as well so if you have any suggestions for those they would be nice as well.

What is maya? I've never used it before but it sounds interesting can you start from square one? Like the begininning?

You don't need a parachute to sky dive. You need one to sky dive twice
:icongirlnamedspike:
Starting from square one might be a tad more intensive then you think. Maya is a fairly complex beast.

The first full tutorial series I'm releasing with Rendered3d.com is going to be the introduction to Maya and the User Interface and scene Management series. That would probably be the best place to start.

We also have some project based tutorial series coming out as well.
