Its been getting to me for years now that maybe, just MAYBE I should try some sort of Linux out. I want to, but... what kinda linux would work on a system with these (crappy) stats?

I have at least 4 hds (1 of which I intend to blank out for the very purpose of running a Linux platform)
4 GB of ram
and an AMD Phenom Quad Core processor

Sure, I may not have read into other requirements too deeply, but can I even RUN linux at this rate? And if so, what kind should I get? Thanks for your help folks!

Last time I checked 4GBs of RAM and a quad core processor was nowhere near crap. Of course you can run Linux, I have it on a 900mhz/512mb RAM system absolutely fine.

This sounds like thinly disguised boasting :unimpressed:

the distribution most people try out these days is ubuntu linux [link]
it's based on debian, has a large community and is very friendly to newcomers. Ubuntu goes with Gnome, there is a KDE version too [link] (two desktop environments, depending look and the programs you get)

What geronimo89 says.

And your stats may be crap with Vista, but they're WAY more than needed for Linux.

No, its just that when you mention you have anything on the internet, ONE jackass is going to say "ZOMG IT'S CRAPPY" or "ZOMG IT SUX" no matter how good it actually may be. So I decided to take away their thunder by proclaiming my comp is crap right off the bat.

[link] :)

As stated before, Ubuntu is a smart first distro. It has a huge noob-friendly community and most of it will work right out of the box.

I run ubuntu just fine on similar specs. I think you'll enjoy it. You might want to start first with a Wubi install though. Ubuntu can be installed/removed now through windows like a normal program. Once installed, upon next boot you'll be given an option to either start Ubuntu or windows. The whole process doesn't take very long at all, and if you wanted to later you could move your Wubi install to its own partition.

Heck, you can run some Linux distros off a floppy drive...

I have one computer running Linux Debian off a P2 600MHz machine just fine. But as others have said, Ubuntu is probably a good starter distro to try.
