There are several ways to do this, but the easiest is:
cmd+shift+3 - takes a screenshot of the whole desktop cmd+shift+4 - takes a screenshot of the area you select
These will get saved to the desktop - to put the contents on your clipboard, hold down ctl as well
You can also use the Grab application, located within your Utilities folder

I'd like to add that you can also hit spacebar after cmd+shift+4 to take a screen shot of a particular window. Just click the window with your mouse when you get the camera cursor.

my default is pdf so it has a embed colour profile, the software is snapz pro x by ambrosia software, unfortunately. You have to review the image before taking another (I usually take shots in bursts)
