Hi , did any of you guys face this prob out there ? The mac i'm using is a MAC OS version , and i'm using windows XP in it , and i've had the MAC about only 7 months plus , but lately i'm kinda dissapointed cuz it has been shutting down on its own several times already .

Here's the thing , I've been using 3D maya program in my windows XP as well as photoshop , So all along , usually 2 or 3 times in a week i'll let my MAC stay up all day long for its 3D rendering progress , some people told me its due to overheat , but could it be that fast to get overheat ? Also my windows XP has some virus which couldnt be removed , and theres one time when it shuts down and the mac isnt hot at all ,So what do you guys think ?

Do you think its the virus which causes the shutdowns ? or anything else ? any idea on how to prevent it from getting worse ?

Thanks :(

Could well be the virus - if you can identify it then look up what the virus does.

One sure way to eradicate the virus is to wipe your Windows partition, remove the partition completely and then create a new one using Bootcamp. A total pain but it should be fairly fool-proof! Then, if it can be avoided, just never go on the internet using Windows - do all downloads using Mac OS X and run a virus checker such as the excellent and free ClamXav on the downloads before transferring them to the Windows partition.

I would also suggest Grisoft's AVG Free anti-virus software, although updating it means connecting to the internet if that's the only connection you make then you should be reasonably safe, just don't do any web browsing in Windows.

If your Mac never shuts down while using Mac OS X all day then I'd say it was Windows that's causing the shutdown problems.

thanks , i would try removing the windows partition as you mention , but does it means that my mac space would all return to its default size once the windows partition is removed ? thanks :)

yes youll get the space back and then you can run boot camp assistant again to stick a new partition in there. make sure you back up any important files to the mac partition first because youll lose everything on the doze one when you remove it.

i seriously recommend looking into getting the mac versions of maya and photoshop because having to boot into doze in order to do something kinda defeats the point of having a mac. you can also be sure that the fans will be managed properly to stop overheating when youre in osx, whereas in windows there may be some problems with that.

hey thanks for the reply , i was wondering as you said to use the Mac version of Maya , so if i were to use the maya version in Mac and to save the file , will i be able to open up the maya file in windows maya either ? thanks :)

the files should be transferrable back and forth between all platforms yes, but you might run into some problems if you save with a newer version and then transfer the file to be opened with an older one (although that happens on a single platform too).

I have windows on my mac as well and although mine doesn't shut down on it's own that much, I think it only happened once and I'm still puzzled about what happened, but the thing is yes Mac does heat up insanely fast and that's just probably one of the bad things about it. Aside from it being all wonderful and sorts so I'm guessing you should invest in a laptop fan or at least have a table fan blowing at the left side of your mac when you're doing your work. It prevents it from heating up fast and I guess it works better? At least that's what I have been doing.

MAc's do tend to heat up pretty fast, although you may not be able to feel it, they can generate alot of heat and in most cases cause the system to reset, shutdown or otherwise, hmm, i dont know of any other tips i can give to prevent it from doing such a thing other than keeping it in a cool place.

hi thanks for the reply , i was quite puzzeled by the shut down too , i have a fan in the area but its a celing fan which blows from the top like the usual one and i usually leave my window open where my mac's back is facing it , at night its pretty cool outside and the cool air comes from outside , so does it help to cool down the mac a little ?
