So, I was a long time Windows user who, literally, just two days ago, switched over to Mac. I set it up and used a Lacie external hard drive to copy everything, but i picked through all my files so it took me a few hours in addition to downloading Microsoft Word. So the next morning, I hop on my new computer and it just turns off. I didn't press any button, it just turned off. I turned it back on and in five minutes, off it goes. I searched the Internet only to find out that it was MOST LIKELY a code error, then I read through numerous convoluted "solutions" That seemed as if you could only understand them if you read computer manuals for a living. I called tech support who regretfully advised me to go take it back and get a new one because they didn't know what was wrong with it...

Here I am, a new day, a new computer, hoping like hell that it won't shut off on me. The last computer already cost me hours in copying files AND now I'm out one of my authorized downloads for Microsoft word. I copied everything onto the second computer last night. So I must ask, is this a common problem? Do you guys hear about this happening at all, even one time you know of? My confidence is not very strong in this computer right now, so I would really like to know the probability of a second happening of this problem...

I doubt it had anything to do with you,

It was probably just faulty hardware that happened to not like you, could have happened to anyone

now if problems continue, it is likely that some of your files you transfer over are corrupted and causing the crashes.

Faulty computers happen now and then, but Apple's failure rate is normal for the industry. Your new one should be fine.

Well to be honest it's unlikely to be the files that transfered over. a corrupt windows file isn't going to effect OS X.

Can’t say I’ve ever run across anything like that, or even heard of anything like it. The closest would be the Mac equivalent to the Blue Screen o’ Death, which is rare, but does happen on occasion. Even then you have to shut down manually.

Sounds to me like it was the computer itself. Or like the internet said, a code error possibly caused by what files were copied. Although, if it hasn't happened again, then it was most likely the machine itself.

This is the first time I have heard of this happening, personally. Other then that, I don't know myself. But like I said, it sounds more like a hardware problem with that particular machine.

Another forum that might help which has people that know what they are talking about is [link] I have found that place to be a great help since I converted back in 2006. Not only software wise, but hardware wise too as well as OS.

Sincerely, Kat.

The Public is more Familiar with Bad Design than Good Design. It is, in effect, conditioned to prefer Bad Design, because that is what it lives with. The new becomes Threatening, the Old Reassuring.

Thanks so far, everyone. I don't think it would have been corrupt files...All I transferred was music and photos. Today, Its been so far so good and hopefully everything will continue to run smoothly

This is the first that I've ever heard of such a case. I'm sure that the problems that you experienced are very uncommon on an overall scale.
