I'm not sure what compelled me to do this, but after a writing a long-winded rant about how much I hate Macs, I've decided to give it another chance. It's not meant as a response to the other person's Topic, it's really just coincidence. I just got a new macbook about a month ago. It was pretty smooth, but not much faster than my PC laptop, which is 4-5 years older. Of course, the right-click issue took a while, but that's quite minor compared to the mind-boggling failures I had to endure with my Mac. I have a long rant in the Complaints forum, but strangely I didn't even cover all the problems with Mac. Here's a bigger list, minus some of the venom.
- Barely noticeable improvement over PC. The tech-suppot guy I consulted at the store said my Mac would have improved battery life, better Internet reception, and faster application processing. The wireless Internet and the battery life were barely-noticeable improvements (shocking, given the fact that my PC's battery is so old). iTunes was the best improvement(logically) but still not much. Photoshop Elements was faster on some parts, slower on others.
- the Mac would get REAALLY hot if left on for even a few hours. I noticed it had barely any vents for its fan. It just got hot. I wonder if that had anything to do with the issues below...
- Across the board, it's hard to resize windows because there's just that little tab on the right-hand corner. I'm aware of the F9 feature, but it's still annoying, especially since I have to move an image first in order to resize it sometimes. Also, the little green (+) only seems to make images maximize vertically, which makes me reach for that little tab anyway to get a full-screen window.
- iTunes library performed arbitrary folder actions without telling me. As I transferred music from my external,it would make duplicates, mis-categorize music, assigned random artist names to songs, and even deleted files. Worse, it caused me to accidentally deleted ALL my purchased music. I wrongly assumed it would warn me if I were to delete purchased files. ***- The above could be remedied if a Mac-friendly Torrent Client were available. Anyone know of one I can use?
- Firefox occasionally locks up, or shuts down randomly. No idea why. It's annoying as hell though. On a rare occasion, it will mess up a webpage, making me almost think I got a virus or something. This only happened twice, though.
- Preview can't handle Animated GIFs. GIFs can only be viewed in motion in Safari or Firefox, but it's ugly, and I'm unable to resize or fly through them in a slideshow. -- Preview doesn't let you slide through images unless you tell it to. Its default action is to open a new window for every image you want to see larger. Sure, there's iPhoto, but then I have to resort all my images for that application, and personally add any new images.
- Lots of features advertised, but they're a PAIN to use. Like, Automator and Terminal... I hear they are useful, but they just end up being DIFFICULT. In fact, most of the system is odd and cryptic. --The free-floating icons and folders are useless and just lead to a disorganized mess, so I had to find the "tile" feature in order to maintain sanity. --Moving files is awkward because the folder icon and name are separate. --Keyboard shortcuts are awkward not just because I'm used to PC, but because they tend to require me to press more keys at once to make something happen. Saving a screenshot requires shift, control, clover, and 3 of all things. For PC, it's just Fn + Insert. There's no forward-delete key; I have to hold Fn + Delete. Much more annoying than it seems.
---It's hard to tell even what certain keys do, because of the weird symbols used in the "keyboard shortcuts" list, which don't match with the keyboard itself, which may not match with the system itself. It'd be great if my Mac could just TELL ME what the heck is going on in its computer brain without me having to peruse the Help section constantly to see what I can and can't do.
- There's no System Restore. Seems I have to BUY this thing called Leopard to use Time Machine in order to replace missing or messed up files. Thankfully, the easy and ever-so-useful Automator was free.
- I use Photoshop Elements 4. On the Mac, it has a neat see-thru window thing, but I can't CHOOSE whether or not to use it. There's just a little gap between a full-size window and the layer bar, behind which is the desktop. I frequently make the drawing window disappear accidentally by clicking in that tiny space while trying to scroll or resize the window.
- A few times, Photoshop closed down inexplicably as I tried to draw a picture. It made no attempt to restore my images, and I lost a lot of work because of it. THIS is what finally set me off. No apology for messing up. Apple simply did its best to pretend like nothing ever happened, just like it did with my iTunes purchases.
So, that's it for the pressing matters. Anyone who has similar issues, feel free to share the angst. Just don't go trolling, and name-calling, okay? I'm still miffed, but I should calm down enough so that my responses to your posts are not spewing hatred. If you're a Mac-lover and feeling brave, you can read my Complaints post. Actually, this Youtube video embodies my feelings in a less angsty, more polished and humorous fashion. (Don't worry, it's not a stupid "revenge" prank made to piss you off, nor is it a flagrant diss on Macs.) [link]w-BGBdB2Qk
I know I should just call Apple Support, but I distrust customer care, and fear having to wade through "Oh, did you check the trashcan for your lost music? Did you know we email receipts? Did you save your image file in the wrong folder?" You know, that sorta thing. At any rate, if you're a Mac-lover, and willing to help, you may just save me from having to sell off or microwave my Macbook (The purchase turned out to be non-refundable, for only-now apparent reasons.) Coping tips, as well as application tricks will be accepted. I'd especially appreciate any freeware recommendations for it, like something that could let me edit and view animated GIFs easily. Thanks for your time.

wow. you're a hero to those of us that hate mac snobs and all, but i use firefox on windows and it acts the same way. it only started after the last update, so hopefully the next one will fix it. otherwise, i've used macs only a handful of times and i can say i agree with everything i read before tl; dritis set in.
I would never rant about my Mac like that, but I have problems with it (esp. because its 3 years old). The logicboard is its major problem, but I find that Firefox works perfectly for me.

Barely noticeable improvement over PC. The tech-suppot guy I consulted at the store said my Mac would have improved battery life, better Internet reception, and faster application processing.
When using XP on my MacBook, I notice a significant difference between the two, in favour of the MacBook.
Maybe you need more RAM - whether you have a Mac or PC. I have used PhotoShop CS3, Dreamweaver, Flash, and Safari at the same time (it's the usual setup I have for schoolwork) and it's never slow.
You know what else gets really hot ? Some tablet PCs. Or those Windows ones whose batteries caught on fire ! I believe the paper that came with the MacBook even says you shouldn't expect it to be comfortable enough to have on your lap all the time (though I've never really had a problem).
Is there a Windows programme to preview animated .GIFs ? When I had XP, I never had one that did that, I had to use Firefox or IE.
I'm not sure what you mean about the folders ?
I agree about how the keyboard shortcuts are written, they're obnoxious.
- There's no System Restore. Seems I have to BUY this thing called Leopard to use Time Machine in order to replace missing or messed up files. Thankfully, the easy and ever-so-useful Automator was free.
Um... I'm not sure what you mean. "Leopard" is an Operating System - like "XP" or "Vista" is. I don't know, I never used System Restore on Windows, I never had a need to.
About the PhotoShop Elements - if you hit "F" does that change anything ? In CS3, you hit "F" (this also works on Windows) to switch between views. You can have full-screen or a matted view that's like Windows would be.
I don't get it... why aren't you pissed at ADOBE ?
Before I had CS3, I used GIMP to edit animated GIFs. It's free. I, personally hate the programme, though, but it's the only free thing I found that let me edit the individual time of frames.
Like =silentpair said, for standing up to the Mac snobs, but some of the problems you quoted aren't really Mac-specific. I mean, my Photoshop always crashes when I first try to run it, but I would cite that as a software problem before blaming the hardware.
To your list I would only add the problems I have had with their tech support. With my PCs, I can usually figure out enough about the problem to fix it myself, and even if not I knew there were about five shops in town I could bring it to. With my Mac, they have me all scared to even attempt installing my own RAM, and I know if I ever did have a serious hardware problem then I would have to drive 60 miles to take it to the Mac Store. When it comes to hardware dealers/repairs, they know they're the only game in town and they want to keep it that way.
I can't stand Macs either. My college tutor calls them "logical", but my mind doesn't use logic anyway, so that's useful to me... My friends say that they're "way better than windows". It might be, depending on what you want to do. To game, I'd rather use my custom built Computer. To write... again, my Computer. I hate Mac Keyboards, and my Keyboards are incompatible with Macs. Note that these friends also have Computers...
Its specialised, no two ways about it, and its expensive, also no two ways about it, regardless of "quality", all the computer faults I've had in the last six months have all been on a Mac, not a Computer. Didn't matter whether it was a College Mac or somebody elses', I've always encountered the same problems, mostly the processor going into overload and lagging because it isn't large enough to handle all the data running around. Looking at the specs of Macs as well, for £800 I could get a computer that I was using three years ago for £500... And even with a multi-system Mac, for one powerful enough for me to run my games on it and have the Mac loafing in the background 24/7, as it inevitably will, I'll have to shell out £1500 to get it to the level that my CURRENT computer's at.
Keyboard and mouse are both annoying, although problems I can't fix because otherwise there'll be another disadvantage somewhere...
The programs keep lagging because the Processors are tiny (although that said, I usually have 4+ applications running...).
I've also had around twenty crashes on a Mac... Computer? Not had one since Windows 2000, and that was a good 7 or 8 years ago.
Then theres compatibility. My memory stick, and everything else we use in college, won't run on the Macs properly, and when it does, at home the work we've done turned into Mac coding unless it was done in a graphic application (Scratch, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, et cetera). My Word documents won't even open on a Mac, but instead I get an error message.
The software errors I've found on Macs also don't happen to me on Windows
My climbing club also had a bunch of Macs in a back room, although they were useless things (MacBooks I think), and in the end they ended up giving them to charity because no one else wanted them. They're a pain to upgrade, unless you know crap about them, and support for them in near non-existant. I want help with my PC, I ask my dad if I can't solve it.
And then there's viruses. Viruses could exist for Macs, but there's no point in making them, since Mac users don't have a large enough community to make it worth while (although admittedly, websites like this will have quite a few Mac users. I'd reckon a full half of the users).
I mean no insult to Mac users or Apple in general by this, just my opinion on Macs...

Fashion is a myth. There is no fashion, just the genre of music that influenced you, creating a clothing style. There is no fashion. Fashion is a myth.
Apple do not make or have any control over Firefox or Photoshop, so those complaints are kind of irrelevant here - ask in the Software forum instead.
Laptops get hot, that's a fact. Some get hotter than others, but you should rest assured that Apple have designed theirs to withstand the heat generated through normal use. It's important that you do not block any of the vents and ideally you should use a laptop on a flat surface like a table (this is true for all laptops).
If you were looking for a power house then you'd have been better off with a desktop model such as the Mac Pro, a laptop is primarily designed for convenience and portability, not power.
I've never had any problems with iTunes deleting files, if it's guilty of anything then it's creating duplicates. When you delete file(s) from your iTunes library it asks whether or not you wish to delete the original file - click yes and it's goes to the Trash. I don't know about you but the first thing I do when I run a new app for the first time is to see what preferences there are, and try out a few to see what's what; looking through the preferences for iTunes, I find nothing about deleting files, the default action when adding songs is to copy them to the iTunes folder. When you purchase music it's your responsibility to ensure that you have a backup of it - I suggest burning the files to a data CD or DVD. If you did not do this then, frankly, more the fool you.
I'm not sure quite how you guaged the speed difference between your Mac and PC, when it comes to raw CPU power you're governed by what the processor is - if your Mac has, for instance, a 2GHz Core 2 Duo, and your PC has the same chip, then you're going to get roughly the same raw CPU power from both machines. The difference is in how many resources the OS takes up (CPU cycles, RAM, HD space), and on that score you say the Mac was better so I really don't know what you're complaining about there! I seriously doubt that a PC with a slower CPU could beat a Mac with a faster CPU, running the exact same apps.
On a final note, is your Photoshop Elements the Intel version? Last I heard, it was not Universal Binary or Intel so would be running under PPC emulation.
Oh and the keyboard - it's a laptop, it's never going to have the best keyboard. You can get a full size Mac keyboard if you don't like it, they have all the keys and you don't need to use Fn to access those fiddly functions because there isn't enough room for a full set of keys. I never liked laptop keyboards myself, PC or Mac.
1) Performance My Macintosh machines are very fast when running Windows, but trying to compare OS X to Windows is harder. That said, I don't get crashes all the godamn time in OS X like I do in Vista.
2) Yeah. Laptops get hot, especially modern ones. Deal with it.
3) The green button acts as a "fit to content" button, not maximize. OS X is not designed to run everything maximized - it is not Windows. Expose is there for a reason.
4) iTunes, by default, will "manage" your iTunes library. Adding a file to the library will mean the file gets copied to your iTunes location. I've never, ever had iTunes delete ANYTHING, especially without asking for confirmation. User error sounds about right here. As for torrents, 2 seconds on Google will reveal such things as Tomato Torrent.
5) Firefox. Yeah, it's buggy. Hardly Apple's fault, they don't have anything to do with it.
6) Yeah, alright, it doesn't handle animated .gif files. Oh cry. In addition, my Preview opens new images as a pane within the original. User error again. That all said, Windows doesn't do it either.
7) Automator and Terminal especially are advanced tools - kind of like the Registry in Windows. Don't touch if you don't know what you're doing. That said, they're incredibly powerful. - Free floating icons? What? - No they're not - OH NO, COMMAND+KEY RATHER THAN CTL+KEY, SO HARD.
8) Err, my keyboard matches perfectly. What exactly can't you find?
9) What do you mean, no System Restore? If you format your OS X partition, you can use Time Machine to restore it to exactly where you left off. Plus it's a doddle to recover files.
10) So you can't use the application properly. Perhaps learn how to be more accurate with your mouse? I never have this problem in Photoshop. You can also switch between the traditional OS X view and Windows style by pressing F.
11) It's Photoshop, by Adobe. Not Apple. See Firefox.
A lot of the above seems to be you wanting it to work like Windows - but it's not Windows, and never will be. Once you accept how OS X works, you'll start to like it. Nothing is perfect (ie: animated GIFs in Preview), but don't just go off on one.
