Are you a programmer? Do you know how to work well with PHP, MySQL and distributed database servers? Do you love deviantART? Do you know how to work with linux environments?
And most importantly: Would you enjoy being a member of the coolest IT development team on this planet?
If so, we've got good news for you. We're looking for skilled IT developers to expand deviantART's programming team. If you want to contribute to the largest art community in the world, work with other people that share your interests, develop large massively scalable web applications used by thousands of people every second, and get some free deviantWEAR, then you're on the right track.
What we're looking for:
* People with previous experience on the field (self-taught perfectly acceptable, although
MS/BS/PhD is cool too).
* Expertise with PHP and other server technologies.
* Knowledge of Javascript, XHTML/CSS and other client-side technologies.
* Developers who know how to work with SQL in distributed systems.
* Excitement for solving challenging problems.
* Knowing how and when to have fun!
What we're offering:
* A $dollar symbol in front of your deviantART accountname.
* Being part of a team that you can consult for any of your programming needs at any time.
* Being able to say "I work for dA".
* A free cookie for every bug you fix (if we meet in real life, you're literally going to get
those).
* Access to innovative technologies, and to some of the most pioneering coding techniques in
the industry.
* More benefits that you can read about below.
(notice that this is a full time paid job, not a volunteer job)
You can work from Los Angeles, or from anywhere else you want (providing it has Internet).
Feeling adventurous? You can optionally solve this riddle for an extra bonus before you apply (or just send us some code examples -- or both!). For more details, just read the job description.
Good luck, and we're hoping to have you aboard soon!

We have received a number of responses to this submission. We really appreciate all the enthusiasm everyone has for deviantART. Here are a few things that we forgot to mention in the posting.
- All applicants must be at least 18 years old.
- Previous experience working at other large internet properties is highly preferable (i.e. sites that appear on Alexa's top 500 list)
- If you are currently enrolled in either an undergraduate or masters degree program for computer science, please let us know when you plan on completing your degree. Working for dA while attending school would make you a very very busy person and we would feel bad if you fell behind in your schoolwork
*omol @ "The solution to your example problem is too easy. I demand a challange."
I thought so to, but then there's some pesky little issues that come up once you've figured it out too. Try it and see.
Anyway - I've done (no-frills) solutions in PHP, Javascript (bleeeeuuuugh) and Actionscript (just for some variety).
I'll send them to you +mhalpert. Obviously put them on a PHP servering server to test - you'll need the flash plugin to see the actionscript solution too - it's actually a combined php/actionscript solution since I couldn't be entirely bothered to make a user interface for entering the details in flash - I just collected the data from the forms using php and sent the vars to actionscript through the GET params - but the actionscript does the hard graft - which was the point no?
All versions work perfectly for all scenarios with servers numbering 2 to 25 (reasonable?)
