Cartoonist Wanted

Wanted: Cartoonist.

I'm looking for a new artist for the webcomic Remedy.

What I'm offering:

1) $5 per comic, three comics per week. The comic is usually three panels but even when those panels are split the size and shape of the comic remains constant. So sometimes there is only one large panel. Once there was six. Usually, it's three.

2) In addition to the per page rate, backend profit sharing is available. This will be discussed in private with any applicants so that any questions or concerns can be promptly addressed. This excludes ad revenue which will be turned around and used to advertise Remedial Comics.

3) Any commission work you get through the site you keep all money associated with that and we'll do what we can to facilitate that on your behalf (set up a submission area on the forums or even a submission form or whatever you need to make that work). The artist also maintains ownership of any hard copies (assuming you don't work all digitally) and can sell/donate them at his/her discretion.

4) I assume all costs associated with running and maintaining the website.

5) I'll provide you the story scripts in the format you are most comfortable with.

6) When it comes time to attend conventions I will pay for the cost of your entry to the convention as well as the table. Should you attend you will be responsible for travel expenses although this is something we can talk about and work out on a convention by convention basis.

7) I assume all costs associated with merchandise. Of course merch sales will not be counted as profit until I recoup those costs. But I will assume the startup fees.

What I'm looking for.

1) I'm looking for someone who wants to be a professional cartoonist and a partner in an online business. I'm in it to win it and I want someone who is as serious about being a professional as I am. I'm looking for someone who is self-disciplined and motivated. I need someone who understands that good content, delivered in a consistent and plentiful fashion along with accessibility is the key to building an online audience. I need someone who understands that meeting deadlines in this business is the difference between life and death for the comic. I need someone who can build and maintain a buffer.

2) I'm looking for a partner. If you approach this gig as "doing your three comics a week" and nothing else then you are not the person I'm looking for. You have to want to work to make this succeed. I'm not going to be throwing extra work at you and demanding it get done for nothing. But when it comes to things for the readers, wallpapers, graphics to make the forum or site pretty, T-Shirt designs, that sort of thing; you have to want to do this stuff because it helps build the business. You have to want to work to make it a success.

3) Someone who can attend conventions in the U.S. There are some amazing artists in other countries and I don't discount for a second their skill but if they cannot attend Comic Conventions or the travel cost is so prohibitive that it makes it not worth it then you should probably look elsewhere. Folks in Mexico... well I have some experience in immigration law and I know what it's like trying to get a visa to visit the U.S. from Mexico. It takes months and it can be extremely difficult if not impossible in some cases. Canada should not be a problem.

4) You should be able to deal with people tactfully and courteously both on and offline. Have a professional attitude and treat your audience with a business-like appreciation. You must be able to work quickly and be capable of producing fast sketches for conventions and work well even when people may not appreciate the time or consideration it takes to complete said works, all while keeping a level head.

5) You have to know how to pace yourself. Part of being a professional is not allowing yourself to get burned out on a project. You have to be able to get the work done on deadline and you have to know how much more you can give without doing too much. Like everything in life, it's not a sprint it's a marathon.

6) You need to have the ability to make art with an intention for it to be printed. The rules for creating art on the internet (usually in RGB color and Jpeg format) and creating art for printing are completely different. You need to understand these rules and create art with printing in mind or be willing to learn before you even start drawing the comic. The same goes for things like T-shirt designs. You have to understand or be willing to learn the difference between drawing something for digital publication and drawing something with the intention of having it printed. The concern for print requirements has to come first.

If you want to know more about the comic you can check out the archive at www.remedialcomics.com. If you want to know more about me just ask. In essence though I'm an out of work paralegal who is transitioning to freelance writer. I've got a couple paid writing gigs under my belt so far but they are still a few months away from being published so I can't publicly discuss them (I'll be happy to discuss them with whomever joins up with me). I am also the founder of Webcomics Community (www.webcomicscomminity.com) a free gathering place for webcomics creators that updates three times a week with articles and reviews related to webcomics. Anything else you want to know just ask.

If you are interested please send me an e-mail. My e-mail address is rob@remedialcomics.com

Just note a moderator and stop arguing. You can find one in any of the top threads that have an exclamation point. This should solve your problem.

Not even sure how these old threads get brought back.
quikthnkr's avatar
Yes indeed. Please moderators lock this post. Like zombies to brains the morally outraged "starving artist" enablers/apologists can't seem to resist the siren call of this thread.

Ugh, not this shit again.

Indeed. Idiots love to troll. This post is almost a year old and they have to come try and pick the carcass clean. Seriously.

The peoples speaking out about cheap wages are the people who are tired of buyers like you cheapening the freelance community. You are just as bad as the naive artists accepting your commissions because the both of you are contributing to a huge problem with freelance work. Art is work and usually the consensus is that an artist should be paid cheaper because its seen as an easier, funner career choice with opportunities to become "famous". The sad reality is, those who do become "famous" through their work is few and far between. We all want to be shooting stars, but usually it ends with just a constant struggle to pay bills and get good wages for artwork. But, that is what being an artist is. Struggling to do what one loves.

I know this is an older post. I just wanted to put my 2 cents in.
Also, PS, insulting someone for having an opinion on the subject matter is not a very professional way to present oneself. Also, touting around expertise, degrees, and successes, doesn't put you on a pedestal where you're above criticism. You're just one in an endless sea of people with the same dream as you.

I never said I was a professional at making comics. I run it as an actual business but I have a real job. This is my hobby.

I don't care about the artistic community or the health of the freelance art industry I care about me and the people that I work with. I think I've expressed that enough that you should really know better.

In the future please keep your self indulgent opinion to yourself. It is not wanted or warranted in this truly ancient thread.

And if you think I was trying to put myself on a pedestal you need a class in reading comprehension.

Please go away. Don't come back.

I appreciate your interest but this is a really old ad revived by idiots. Remedial Comics is not hiring at this time. However if you send an e-mail to rob@remedialcomics.com I will add you to the list of artists I pull from when I need more work done than the current artists I work with can handle.

Thanks

So you're offering $5 per comic with the panels ranging from 1-6 per comic with three comics per week. At best that is $1.66 per panel and worst is 83c. You claim you're looking for professionals but you're offering peanuts that quite frankly are a slap in the face for every hardworking cartoonist.

I doubt you're after professionals. More like the young and naive who can be fooled into believing this is yet another amazing opportunity for 'exposure'. I'm not knocking the idea of you joining the throng pulling out teeth trying to eek out a few bucks with online web comics but do you really think that paying that sort of rate will attract the talent to bring life to you're words? Is that all they're worth? Will your artist be prepared to work for a few years at that rate to gain any sort of following or do you think you have an instant winner?

First.... you're an idiot. Not a little one either but a quite spectacularly large idiot. Second.... who the hell are you to tell me how to run my business? Did I solicit your feedback? No. I have degrees and expertise in a whole bunch of things but I don't spend my time writing to people and forcing my opinion of their job offers down their throats. The arrogance of people like you (and there seems to be a lot of them centered on this site) is shocking. In short, get stuffed. Third.... you clearly don't do much research... the ad you are commenting on is practically ancient in internet terms. Nearly a year old. And guess what? I found my artist. His name is Corey Kramer... he's a graduate of the Joe Kubert School (pretty much the most prestigious art school in comics) and we've been making and publishing comics together for over eight months now. Wanna guess how I met him? How about what I pay him? Go on guess. Or you could just read the ad again. We formed an LLC together and we've already exhibited at NY Comic Con and Connecticon. Our table was in the same row as Webcomics.com, Blind Ferret Entertainment, Nintendo and DC Comics.

We're doing just fine. And if you bothered to take even a moment to check my site you might know that.

And guess what... I just worked on a print submission that I'm sending around to editors and I got it done for FREE and it looks awesome. Suck on that.

You really do need to pay more than $5 per comic.
Even if the comic takes 30 minutes to churn out from start to finish, which it won't, that's still a butt-load less than you should be paying.

If you consider yourself to be a professional, and want to attract professionals, you need to pay professional rates.

If you pay Peanuts, you don't get Sparky Shultz.

I'm not sure exactly what's going on but it appears there is nothing in your gallery. On your home page I saw a bunch of photographs but only one or two drawings and only one thing that was color (colored by you but drawn by someone else).

If you have other stuff please feel free to link me.

I think you just didn't go into "browse". I currently have no art in the "featured" portion of my gallery.

If it still doesn't work, here are some direct links to my own drawings as well...
