I have a LaCie 160 gig (though with a power cord) and I like it a lot. I've had it a couple years now always on and I've had no problems with it.

I'd go with one with at least a USB port since some computers (older ones) don't have a firewire port.

You can even get a case which turns your computer HDD into an external HDD - this means you can get a cheaper desktop HDD and whack it into this case, and then use it as a portable case, only problem is that it is 1. big, 2. it needs a power block as well and 3. it can heat up a bit, and can be quite noisy.

you cant go wrong with those lacie porsche ones if youve got some cash to splash. they do well against impacts and theyre tiny. as for interfaces, it depends on your setup. if youve got a whole load of usb devices plugged in then go for something with firewire so you can stick it on its own bus. if youve not got a bunch of usb stuff then get a usb one for greater compatibility with other computers. if youve got firewire800 i think youd have to get a dual/triple interface one to support it anyway, but youll definitely want to use the fw800 over any usb.

since youre gonna be going cross-platform with it you dont really need the firewire. hardly any pcs have it so its just a waste of money (plus if that usb is usb2 its about the same speed as fw). go for option a and you wont be disappointed :)

yea the firewire really isnt worth losing 40 gigs over unless both computers can use it :)

um...what? Firewire, unlike USB, can run as fast as it says it can. USB looks great on Paper, but firewire is better hands down. Macs also work better with fire wire. IF your using you will have to format the hard drive to FAT32, macs cannot read NTFS, the windows format. FAT32 is an industry standard, iPods, MP3 players, jump drives, they all run on FAT32.
