Hey, I'm wondering if I can run blu-ray movies on my computer if I get a blu-ray drive.
From what I hear, every part of my system has to be HDCP compliant for the movie to run at full resolution. I am pretty sure about everything working except for my monitor.
I have a Radeon HD 4850 videocard, which has two DVI ports. However, my monitor uses a VGA cable so I use to a VGA to DVI adapter from the videocard. I am fairly sure my monitor is not HDCP compliant (I can't really tell, though, I got the monitor from my Dads work and the labels were stripped off it. All I know is that it is made by KDSUSA.)
Seeing as HDCP should only apply to digital signals, and I am pretty sure the monitor would be using an analog signal because of the VGA cable it uses, would I still be able to play the blu-ray movies? I am thinking either the movie would not play because of the conversion from DVI to VGA, or it WOULD play because HDCP does not work with an analog connection.
So, in short, will this work? If not, do I need to buy a new monitor or use software to bypass this (AnyDVD HD or maybe PowerDVD?) Thanks

As it's not Digital it's impossible for it to be HDCP complaint.
Regardless of the outcome, you'll get a video stream sent to your monitor, the question is at what resolution that video stream is.
On a digital connection with no HDCP, and on discs that actually use it (apparently, very few do), you'll get a 960x540 pixel image (approximately, the height can vary depending on the aspect ratio). On a digital connection with HDCP, you'll, naturally get the full video resolution available.
I may be incorrect, but, I believe that you will get full resolution sent over an analogue cable (such as VGA or Component), because analogue is seen as inherently inferior, and therefore less people would want to make a copy from an analogue signal than from a digital one (though, in reality, most people would not be able to tell the difference), essentially it's an analogue hole. Depending, of course on how they see this hole, you'll either get a full resolution signal or a quarter resolution signal (960x540 has one quarter the area of 1920x1080), odds are, you'll see the video at its native resolution, but either way, you'll get at least something.
That was pretty much my understanding of it. They can't plug the analog hole, and things like component can carry the full resolution signal. I'm just not entirely sure how the software works when it detects that it's sending the video over the VGA signal. I should really know this, considering I'm a television major
A brand new monthly article which showcases some of deviantART's finest equine artists, as well as recognizing the lesser-known but equally talented ones. Interviews, helpful tutorials and features can all be found here too! I hope you enjoy it.
