Laptop/PC n00b needing advice!

My parents are getting me a new laptop later this summer for when I start working and I need some suggestions for a good model. Right now I'm looking at [link] because it's pretty cheap compared to my last laptop ($2000+ x_x). Unfortunately, I don't know what all those numbers in the specs mean.

Could someone give me the lowdown on what those things mean and what's a good number, etc.? I'm looking for something that's decent for graphic design, as well as digital illustration. Also, if anyone knows of any good XP deals, let me know, because I have heard bad things about Vista, especially Adobe CS3 not functioning properly on it. Feel free to recommend other models, too.

The only thing I don't want is an Apple laptop. Not that I have anything against Apple (I would like to own a Mac one day, actually), it's just that most of my software at the moment is PC compatible only.

Thanks!!!!!

It depends on what you need in a laptop. Laptops aren't typically used for gaming at all, but if you want to do a limited amount of gaming you might want to get one that has a discreet graphics card. If not, integrated is fine.

You should also consider Dell's small business "Vostro" line - you don't have to buy one for a business, and sometimes you can get better deals on those than you would on the very similar Inspirons.

I'm not much of a gamer. I will, however, be doing some detailed digital artwork. Would that still need a good graphics card?

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check those out.

If it's artwork as in photoshop type stuff (not 3D renders), you'll just need a decent amount of memory and a good CPU. I don't do much heavy duty photoshop-y stuff, so maybe others will come along with more specific recommendations, although I think most of the computers that Dell sells would at least be ok with digital artwork.

Ah, I just noticed, Windows XP is still available on the Vostro line if you're not a fan of Vista. :)

Yep, mostly Photoshop stuff. I'll continue looking around then. Thanks for your help!

acer aspire 5315. it was about seven hundred australian dollars.
let's consult the trusty specs sticker on the front panel.

intel celeron processor 530
(1.73 gHz, 533 MGz FSB, 1MB L2 cache)
up to 64MB mobile intel graphicsmedia accelerator X3100.
512 MB DDR2 ram. [i had to upgrade this to 1024 to run vista basic comfortably.]
15.4" (Widescreen) WXGA Acer Crystalbrite LCD (8ms/220nits)
80GB HDD [separated into C:/ and D:/]
DVD Super Multi double layer
802.11b/g WLAN antenna.
Windows Vista Home Basiv. [this might just be the officeworks sales, but for seven hundred i wouldn't expect more.]

i'd definitely recommend having a look. :]

Sorry, this doesn't help me at all. You're just telling me how awesome your own computer is. What do the specs mean?

Actually, his computer is crap. I had a better computer that I built for around $800 back in 2002. Well, closer to $1200 with the screen, but that was six years ago.

I didn't say that I admired his computer, I'm pointing out that he's just bragging about it.

I wish I could build my own.
