Do you take notice of the DDs any more? I have to say, since the DD lost its prominent place in the right hand column last year, I dont really keep tabs.
Nevertheless thousands of people do. The DD still plays an important role in giving the budding writer confidence that they are on the right track, and in exposing their work to a wider audience.
Including todays, there have been 48 poetry DDs so far this year.
I took the liberty of marking the works of prose with an asterisk. Yep. Thats right guys. Six prose DDs so far this year. And just one [one?!?] in the last two months. I know for a fact that there have been a good deal of excellent suggestions. A good deal more than six anyway.
With this in mind, is there going to be a new gallery director for prose?
Have you suggested a piece of prose that hasn't make it past border control to DD-land? If so, let's see.
Do you think the quality of prose has fallen over the course of the last year?
Poetry's not my thing, so I usually pass over the DD's that are poetry. I haven't ever seen any of the prose ones. I'll have to go catch up.
No, I don't think the quality of prose has fallen, but I do think that it takes time to find the good ones. It seems to me it's easier to look at a picture and say "Wow, that's good", than it is to read a piece of work and determine if it's DD worthy.
I'll be interested to see how many people say they've suggested a DD that hasn't gone through.
Can't answer most of your questions, but as for the quality of prose, I don't think it has fallen. It's hard to say because you would have to be reading all prose ever posted the past few years on dA to tell, and that's not possible.
But my general experience is that good prose -is- being written. Or prose that is promising. *WordCount is doing a pretty good job of scouting prose and then there's UAP and DailyDeviants. But yeah, the prestige isn't the same. Heh, I remember UAP being somewhat prestigious. I remember writers getting a healthy amount of response from readers and critters. Now, people don't even read the article (which is linked in my signature). Just like the DDs, UAP has been somewhat hard to locate since the articles have stopped being sent out as hot topics.
The main thing I picked up from that was the suggestion that we don't have a prose GD (we don't?). And this tells me that I don't know what's going on. Nor have I been looking at DDs. Or favourites. Or anything.
Now, much as I have no problem with the new design in design terms, I would much MUCH rather we had a gallery front page again where I could soo news/faves/forum (and DDs, for good measure?) Now wouldn't that be nice.
And as the your actual questions: No. No. I don't know.
I don't know what to think about poetry DD's. On the one hand, it's great to give some pieces more exposure. On the other, all the extra attention the pieces seem to get for being DD's is from people who don't seem to engage with poetry, and who're trying to network via a constant trickle of 'Wow, that's really great' messages to people they perceive as popular. A huge number of the comments I received on my most 'opular' piece to date were in response to the preview image (which was just a photo of Matthew Perry), rather than the writing!
Personally, I think projects that target the lit community through word-of-mouth rather than the front page are more worthwhile. The competitions, individual 'spotlighting' projects etc.

Yes, but at least the masses are exposed to poetry this way. When I'm not being lazy, I'll sometimes ask the people giving one-sentence comments what they like about the piece, or what their favorite lines are, or what they don't like. It works for me--they'll reread and clarify (maybe even engage with the piece!) and I'll get a useful comment.
Only the first couple were hot topics. Only "official dA news" is sent out as hot topics these days. And that's usually visual art crap that nobody really cares about.
I'm not entirely sure why they're not going out as hot topics, and there's no one to blame really. `imogene is doing a good job of putting the articles out. I think the visual art gets attention, not so much the lit stuff. I'm hoping by bringing this up here, more people will look out for the article.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
