You might try getting critiques and advice in the Literature Workshop Forum. [link]

Read other's poetry, see what works and what doesn't, get better at writing in general and it always shows in your work.

Some general 'to avoid' comments (from one of my lecturers, not me): avoid death topics/writing about nature, don't use repetition and avoid cliche.

I write poems myself and I get my inspration from my emotions. Usually, something happens 2 me & i get a strong emotion...u could try puttings ur emotions into words. or find other forms of insprations.

I think the poem Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas uses all of the things you stated 'to avoid'. Except cliche maybe...

They are rules for beginners. A good poet can do all those things and make it good, a bad poet will do all those things and wonder why they get hatemail from publishers.

Quick, distract them by frequently changing your signature!

Point taken.

I wish I got any mail at all from publishers =p

I've been writing forever and some stuff is just stinky if I try to structure it too much
and keep cleaning it and revamping it.

Poetry is voices from the heart that sometimes only mean something to the writer,
and the best way to become a better writer is to write alot.

Don't worry too much, as you grow in life experience and see more of what life has to
offer, you will become better able to express yourself....
