Oils and Turps

Most of my recent work is made using oil pastel and turps.
What do people think, I never work from a picture, as I am too impatient and never get the final look i want.
What you reckon my next stage of developement should be?

There are plenty of people that work without references. Regardless, an artists path should be (something like):

Find your medium.
Find your subject.
And create.

Rinse and repeat as necessary.
