I guess people don't realize that half of the adds that they see in magazines is stock. And when the History channel does a montage of images, sometimes they use stock footage. In the end, they are probably just jealous that in the real world, more money can be made from stock photography than real photography sometimes. That's how my uncle-in law funded his portrait studio.
First let's look at a definition of Stock Photography: "......professional photographs of common places, landmarks, nature, events or people that are bought and sold on a royalty-free basis and can be used and reused for commercial design purposes. The photographer (or stock photography distributor) has ownership to the images, and the commercial designer has some limited usage of the photo (which is set out in the Terms of Service by the company you purchase the stock photos from). Some conditions of use may include things such as use of the images is licensed, not sold or in case of a stock photo being used in a magazine there may be a maximum number of copies of the image allowed to be printed under the agreement. Terms of Service policies will differ between stock photography distributors.
Stock photography is a cost-effective method for designers to obtain professional photos and images without the costs of hiring a photographer directly....."
Just because DA is teeming with webcam shots... does not mean that stock photography isn't art.
1. It's an amazing feeling to share you work with other artists and see what they can do with it.
2. I've gotten to have several of my stocks used commercially, and even though I didn't get paid in cash all the time, it's the most amazing feeling to know that your photos are being used out there, on T-shirts or in posters and banners and books ect.
3. It helps me and inspires me to create better photomanipulations. I'm always learning.
4. It helps me to see the world in a different way. Sometimes I approach an object artistically, and other times I approach it thinking that it would be great stock. It requires photographing in a different frame of mind.
I'd love to see anyone who says that stock photography isn't art, get out there and try to do it themselves. I'd love to see them try to be successful as a stock artist.
i get what youmean, just this morning i recieved a comment saying that stockis not art, and that i should join myspace. its harhs that people think this, because our stock is art, and it makes art.
i also think that DA finds stock easier to look at, iv had an art account for well over a year longer than my stock, but have 5000 more views on my stock because its easier to look at pictures than read.
I told you you'd get people complaining about stock having DDs... It's not a surprise really. But it shouldn't be taken to heart, I hear people complain all the time that this or that shouldn't be a DD. Just look at all the complaints about nude DDs! We see one of those pratically everyday.
For me, stock is art, but of a different kind. Just like prose is different from paintings. And the best from all the other galleries are receiving DDs, why should the Stock gallery be different?
I do stock because I like the feeling that I'm helping people. It really makes me happy when someone uses one of my photos to create art, or say that I have inspired them to do something. It's great to be able to give something back to the wonderful community we have here.
Granted, I know that my photos aren't professional quality... But I only use this account for photos of people, and as such an impressive background isn't needed. Just something simple that can be cut out, which is what I try to do.
A lot of people take a peek at the stock section and are faced with lots of bad quality pictures... No wonder sometimes others look down upon us.
Keep up your great job! And don't let anyone dishearten you.
Mine aren't professional either. I just pointed that out in the definition because why would there be a professional position for stock photos if they werent't art. I hope my original reply didn't come out sounding narcissistic
As usually, I like what *Della-Stock said on the subject.
I've seen some stock photos that are better quality as well as hold more beauty and meaning that some of the "real art" posted at DA. (I'm not trying to point fingers, there are some in my art galery as well...) Same thing for DD. The word stock doesn't mean "bad", "terrible", or "not worthy of appreciation". -.-;
A good submission is a good submission. Something worthy of being a DD should be a DD. Stock or not.
I'm not sure how to change their misconception... The ideas you listed seem to be good though. Perhaps they might work.
I post stock because I want to provide resources for manipulators and other artists on DA (as well as LJ, because that site rocks too). I love to take pictures. I take thousands of them or pretty much anything ( mostly of my cats though. ). By posting stock, I can share some of the images I take that will hopefully be useful for someone.
I have no idea what the "universal stock contract" would be... I think that's something that should be made and taken care of by each individual person and/or group.
And...I have no idea what you mean by that last sentence.
Alot of the stock I encounter here is of greater quality than the non-stock and quite often is better than the stock you find on "stock for sale" sites... It's a great resource for us starving artists here. Perhaps there should be a "Stock Daily Deviation" which could, with an added message remind some of the more calous users of stock to credit the source of the stock they are using!
First off, everyone here at deviantART would like to say THANK YOU!!! We have received an overwhelming amount of enthusiasm for the launch of version 6 and believe that this has been our best-received launch to date.

The guitar is a musical instrument with ancient roots that is used in a wide variety of musical styles. It typically has six strings, but four, seven, eight, ten, and twelve string guitars also exist.
`karemelancholia is one of the most genuine deviants you could ever met. Always active and a true deviantART cheerleader and supporter in every aspect. You can always count on her to lend a hand or get involved, and you usually will find her doing large amounts of both at any given moment. She's consistently reports on contests around dA, showcases the efforts of her fellow artists and shows her charitable side through various activities. Besides all of this, she's a truly talented artist which is why she's an obvious choice for deviousness this month. Read More
