Well, I've never really bothered with skinning Windows before, I've been pleased with just doing it to Winamp.
Well, actually I am quite anal when it comes to how my computer looks, I've just never wanted to use any of those 'external' programs such as WindowBlinds or Litestep, since I could use what little RAM I have actually got.
I have never noticed the 'visual styles-category' before either.
But now I have, and by mostly guessing I've figured out that .msstyles-files are used by Windows itself.
Am I right?
Because if I am...
...How do you actually use them?
You have to put them in a certain folder or something like that?
Because when I download and unzip the files to a folder there's usually the 'msstyles-file' and one or more .dll-files.
The .mssstyles-file seems to be associtated to some application because it's labeled 'Windows Visual Style File' under 'Type.'
But when I click it the 'Display Properties/Apperance pop up, which I would have expected it to do. But nowhere is my skin to be found...
Anyone up for helping a missguided soul?
you need a program to work .msstyles .. either style xp from [link] or a dll in the system 32 folder. when u download it.. put it in windows\resources\themes. style xp is shareware, or you can get a dll needed in the system 32 folder, but it has to be edited. tha'ts free, depending on if it actually works.
This 'Style XP' is this an actual program that has to be loaded upon Windows starting, or is it just an application that changes in .dll's and in the registry?
Style XP isn't a very good piece of software for what it does. The best and free way to do it is to patch your uxtheme.dll file with one that will enable your visual styles to show up in the appearance tab of the display properties.
Have a great time everyone and please fav this article so as many people can see the featured works. I would recommend seeing each one and faving them too.
