Pixel art is...art made using pixels! And pixels are those tiny dots that make an image on a monitor. A simple paint program such as MS Paint can get the job done when it come to this form of art. :)

png is another type of image file.

PNG (Portable network graphics) is a fileformat that pictures 1 to 1 saves. Not like JPG which changes the qualtity of the pictures. PNG (orginally Ping (PNG's no gif)) is most smaller than GIFs and can store images with over 256 colors.

Pixel art is not JUST art made using pixels, because every piece of artwork on DA uses pixels and it is not all pixel art. Pixel art is really art that is made at a very detailed level, where every pixel matters and is done individually. Proper pixel art should also have a very limited palette, unlike other images.

Another nice thing about PNG's is that they can have partial transparency. To explain: In jpeg's every pixel has a colour. In gif's every pixel has a colour, but can also be invisible and so the background show's through. In a png though, every pixel has an opacity too. This means that you can have a brown pixel with 50% opacity and this will mean 50% of the colour behind it will show though.

This is great for things like web graphics because it means you can have smooth outlines on any background. Using gif's you can have either a sharp background which can look bad, or you blend it with another colour, say white. This means your image will look good on a white background, but if you put it on a colour that isn't white it will have a little jagged white border.

Ahhh I see, thank you very much for the informative explanation :)
