hey everyone!
i posted something in the art scene forum (before i found this one) saying that i wanted to buy my first dSLR camera and needed some assistance. i think i may have narrowed it down to two, but both have flaws and i can't figure out which i should get.
now as i say, i'm a noob, so please bare with me. i'm interested mostly in people, portraits and some concert photography though i know i'll definately want to expand and try other things.
anyways my two favourites are:
the Canon EOS 350D/ Digital Rebel XT vs. The Nikon D40X

what do you guys have to say?? :O_o:

Well, first of all, it's not just a choice of the one body, it's about the system you'll be using most likely really long (if you'll buy some good lenses, changing it is expensive). Both Canon and Nikon are good ones, so there's no baad choice. If you know what kind of lenses you'll need, just see which one has better selection. Also if your friends/relatives have (or you) have lenses from one brand, that might be a good choice.

If you compare the bodys only, 350D and F40(x), I'd say go for the Canon. D40x has some problems, biggest of them being it can't use AF with lenses unless they have internal AF motor (so that might narrow the lens selection). Also I think 350D gives better control for the settings of the camera (with D40(x), you'll need to go through some menus to change them.

Again, if you only compare the bodies, go to store and try them out. Try which one fits better to your hand and which one seems better for you. Both are good cameras and capable to producing good quality pictures (if you'll get good lenses, at least then). You also might want to concider 400D from Canon lineup too.

Also if you're going to take the photography more seriously and can afford, you might want to concider Nikon D80 and Canon 30D.

Nothing personal. I just say if I disagree and enjoy a nice debate.

There was just a thread on this topic... it's still on the front page.

thanks so much! that helps alot..
the reason i'm not goin for the D80 or the Rebel XTi, is that they're much more expensive hehe.. that's all.
also i live in trinidad so i have to order this frum away.. we don't have awesome electronics stores where i can go try 'em out!

thanks so much though! i think i'm leanin towards the canon so far... you think the 2 megapixels is much of a difference??

Anyway, both those will do the job just fine, but I prefer the Canon, if only for the fact that the lens selection is better. Don't worry about the megapixels - worry more about your choice of lenses. Both cameras have good sensors in them, so two megapixels is not going to make a difference.

I would advice to check the D50 instead of the D40x, the limited lens selection the D40x can use -af-s- doesn't makes it very appealing.

In general going with canon or nikon it won't be much difference, so don't sweat it much.

If you can't hold them in your hand before buying, then bear in mind that the 350D is rather small. The entry level Nikons have a more substantial handgrip.

The difference in megapixels doesn't matter, 8 should be really enough for your use. And I have to agree with Claypole1, the Nikon D40x has better ergonomics than Canon 350D (for me, both were really out of question, even D40 is really far too small).

And like eduardofrench said, rather go for D50 than D40 if you'll end up selecting Nikon.

Seconded. If you absolutely CANNOT afford a D50, go with original D40; the 0.5 fps and 4mp gain are really just gimmicks to get soccer moms and suburbanite dads to purchase the cameras. You can get amazing prints from the sensor in the D40.
