If you had $5,000, what photography gear would you buy? Lenses, cameras, filters, software, etc etc...

a nikon D200 body and the rest for two 3 terabyte Raid-6 servers to host all the pictures :D

Currently saving for a Nikon F5 and a couple of lenses.
So i'd probably get that (or an F6 instead) and extend on it with some more lenses and filters. The 5000 mark will be quickly made that way.

I also really need a high quality scanner.

Okay, that didn't post right at all , retry:

(All digital, all Canon)
$5000 is a tough limit.

From scratch:

For wedding/event work:

2 choices:
30D
24-70mm f/2.8 (or 35mm f/1.4)
70-200mm f/2.8 IS
580 EX
Some CF cards

(Less quality, more versatile)

5D
24-70mm f/2.8
580 EX
Some CF cards

(Better quality (AF speed and less noise too), but more restricted)

For art work:

30D
10-22mm
24-105 f/4 IS
180mm f/3.5 (superb macro and telephoto, waaayyyy better than 100mm)
1.4x extender
430 EX
1GB CF card

If I'm adding to what I already have:

135mm f/2
300mm f/2.8

Well done. Hope you can obtain these things. :)

Heh, thanks.

These lists are formed out of personal experience. (And I made sure each added up to 5k)

Personally, I prefer the 5D route for wedding photography. It allows much more room for growth beyond the $5k restriction versus the 30D.

As for my setup, I am eyeing the 300mm f/2.8L next. =)

Go for digital, look at it from a futuristic point: film is dissapearing.

I've seen a lot of nikon proposals here. I'd go for canon, I've been a canon user since I was very young, I'll opt for canon.

5. a Nikon D200
6. an 8gb CF card
7. Voigtlander Bessa-R3a

8. 90mm f/2 lens

yes, i know that i've exceeded the $5000 dollar budget many times over. don't bother me, i'm fantasizing here.

No problem, it was too nicely done to get any criticism from me. ;)

oh yeah, and i forgot to add:
a 700-1200 sq ft studio, fully stocked
a fully stocked darkroom, next to the studio.
parking paid forever.
an 8x10(or larger, even; it'd never leave the studio, so size isn't really a concern) complete set up, with everything)
forevermore's avatar
oh, and one more thing(this is it, i swear):
a pentax K1000 with 50mm lens.
heavy base red, black, yellow and blue acrylic paints.
...i've been wanting for so long to paint one of my pentax's, but i'm worried that the paint fumes would fuck with the meter, etc, so, but another camera that i can junk if it gets screwed up, right?

I'v got my own darkroom so i dont have to buy anything to it, i wount buy new Analog SLR, because i'v got Canon EOS 300V, but i think i could buy Canon 350D or something like that wit a lot of lens, filters and maybe new studio equipment, because i'v got only few bed lapms.
earfight's avatar
Id go for a Canon 5D.

I spent two solid months answering that question to myself... When the list was too perfect to resist, I pulled the money togethar and bought it all!!!! I'm still not entirely sure how I did it...

Caon 5D
17-40 f/4L
70-200 f/4L
28-135 IS USM
580EX flash
BG-E4 vertical grip

Some day I'd like to get the 100-400mm lens. A lot of people have the 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM lens on their list, but I wouldn't want that.... IT'S FUCKING HUGE AND HEAVY! I've also never really needed my lens to have more than f/4 anyways...

I'm also hoping to get a lighting set by the end of the summer... I wish I had $5k for that!

Oh, and the 24-105 F/4L IS USM lens would have been nicer to have than the 28-135 lens, but other than that I'm happy with what I have.
TheLostWolf's avatar
You do realize the 100-400mm is heavier than the 70-200 f/2.8 IS... I really don't think either of then are that heavy though...
MOrngeboy's avatar
Ya I know. But, you would only use the 100-400 on a tripod when you're shooting sports. Like, standing on the sideline of a soccer field. The 70-200 is more of a walk around lens.

The 70-200 f/4L is 1.6 lbs. The f/2.8 IS is 3.2 lbs. Twice the weight! The 100-400 is 3.0lbs. Oh, tha'ts actually less than the 2.8 IS.

See, it's a monster! When I was shooting the Mexican Immigration rally in San Francisco, I saw a LOT of photographers with the 70-200 2.8 IS on one camera, and then a smaller lens on the other. It just looked painful...
xsfizzix's avatar
I posted before I checked you out . Seings how you work at Ritz, I'm sure you've had plenty of time to try the lens out for yourself and decide.

From personal experience, the 70-200 IS is an on-the-fly versatile lens, functionality outweighing its mass (no pun intended). It's almost obsolete in studio work, where primes reign in IQ well over the 70-200 IS.
