I tried to clean my sensor for an upcoming trip that's tomorrow. I blew off a lot of the dust and then went in with a Dust-Aid wand. Bad mistake. Now I have huge smears of debris and large pieces of dust on my sensor. I've tried to get it off three times now to no avail. Is there anything I can do? I tried to use the wand just as the instruction booklet said so. I don't want to press too hard because I'm afraid of damaging it. There's no chance to get it cleaned by tomorrow because it's a holiday here. Is there something I can do?

To tell you the truth, there isn´t you should leave your camera to be cleaned at manufacturers availed store or repair center and go to the trip without the camera.

I don´t mean to be harsh but camera sensor cleaning today is pretty cheap, don´t cheap out in this area and let someone who knows to do this kind of stuff.

You said you have huge spears of debris and dust. Did you slide the wand across the sensor?
:iconincessancy:
No, I just dotted, turned, picked up the brush to a different section of the sensor and repeated.

I'm confused as to what you're saying here. Your sentences don't look complete.

don't worry about damaging the sensor, the hot mirror is the part that gets the dust on it and it's about 4mm of glass layers so you dont really have to worry about pushing too hard.

Note: do NOT use the bottles of alcohol that you will find at a pharmacy or grocery store; that is only 90% pure -- at best -- and only god and the manufacturer know what the other 10% is. Use that and you may be putting more crud on than you'd be getting off. What you want is chemically pure alcohol. Although CLEAN isopropyl will do the job (as will unflavored vodka, in a pinch -- it's made from distilled water and ethanol), denatured alcohol (a mix of ethanol and methanol), sold in hardware stores, is the best choice. It's a little less harsh and a lot less expensive.

I am a trained professional. Don't try this at home.

Vodka also works remarkably well for removing thermal compound from CPUs. It's probably the most multi purpose substance in my freezer right now!

I had spots on my CCD sensor a few months ago. I have a service plan with mine at Best Buy good through 2012 (covers accidental damage too) and while it takes 2 weeks for the whole thing to bring it, clean it, and get it back I really don't have the expertise, knowledge, or tools to clean the sensor properly.

Unfortunately now I have spots on the damn mirror of the camera and while they're annoying as I see them in the viewfinder, they don't show up on the photo (yet). I imagine that, in time, they'll make their way to the CCD sensor. The price you pay for a camera with interchangable lenses!
