Two books I have recently had good experiences are:
-Light and Lighting for Digital Photography by Michael Freeman [link] . A great author and a book that really picks apart the different parts of lighting in general and how to modify it. I think I got the best explanation of some of the lighting terms from this book. The publishing company isn't great for the book and there are a number or error, but if you can ignore those, I found it quite helpful.

-Digital Photography Masterclass is an awesome book by an awesome author. I have learned so much from this book, and have yet to digest half of it; not the kind of book you can read in an hour. Some of the lessons (it is set up like a curriculum) are shallow in material, but the shear breadth of the book is great. Ang explains things really well, and I don't think you could go wrong for the price. As the title suggests though, it is a "masterclass", meaning you should be pretty confident in the basics of both your camera and photography in general. For the less experienced, I've been recommended [link] by the same author, though I have yet to read it.

How to Read a Photograph, by Ian Jeffrey

really awesome. You won't learn much about a camera, but you will about art... which is the main part of photography.

At least the main part of art photography...

Rotovision I think publishes a series of books with lighting diagrams. I do like a few parts of Digital Photography Masterclass by Tom Ang... but it's more like Digital Photography 102... it's not very advanced.

I like "Light: Science & Magic" by Hunter & Fuqua. It blows any other book about lighting out of the water. It describes how light behaves rather than giving you cookie cutter light diagrams. It's a dry read but a must for your library.

well yeah, but even photojournalists have to think artistically

Why?

Look through the any of the 10 largest circulating daily newspapers in the country. The overwhelming majority of the photos in them could have been taken by baboons. Not every PJ works for Nat Geo, and not every paper wants "art".

Then there's all the other branches of the craft in which "thinking artistically" is not only unhelpful, but strongly discouraged.

As suggested above, Tom Ang is an author of quite a few great books pertaining to photography.
National Geographic also publishes Field Guides on all areas of photography that tend to be pretty nice.

Where do you get your information from? If you can't see Photography as a form of artistic expression, why even pick up a camera?
