i have a canon 40d and i really, really want/need an external flash. however, as a poor college student (who was poor even before college), i will probably not have the money for a canon speedlite for the next million years.

has anyone used an "imitation" flash from one of those weird brands you've never heard of, such as this:

and other assorted ones like that from ebay?

it looks okay.. and i've ordered other weird brand camera accessories/lenses from ebay before and i was perfectly satisfied.. (like a wide angle lens attachment as well as a wireless shutter remote). i was just wondering if anyone here had used something like this.
thanks in advance if anyone can give me advice!

I would be quite vary with the 3rd party flashguns. Personally I have not experience with them since I decided not to get one. I've heard people having problems quite often with them, but no with the ones from camera manufacturer.

With flashguns, you probably want the light metering to be correct so you'll get good exposure with the flash, with either bouncing it from a wall or ceiling. This is something I've heard people have had problems with even the better 3rd party manufacturers.

Nothing personal. I just say if I disagree and enjoy a nice debate.

thank you, i knew i should be careful of these from the beginning, and i figured it would be too good to be true to get a good flash for under a hundred dollars. :/

A Vivitar 285Hv is a pretty good flash for under a hundred bucks.

Get a PC cable and a pc to hotshoe adapter and then you can use almost any external flash off camera. That's what I do. My flash cost $1.50 :)

watch out what you attach to that 40d. If you put a high voltage flash from lets say an old film camera. You could fry your camera. I almost found this out the hard way.

There is a website which lists the trigger voltages of various flashes so you can see which ones are safe. I can't remember what it is though :(

And you could always get a wein safe-sync to regulate the voltage.

haha okay now i'm pretty scared to try a non-canon flash. i don't know much about voltage or extra cords (except the off-camera one) as of now so maybe i'll just wait until i can someday afford a speedlite. thanks to everyone who helped.

You can get second hand 420EX flashguns for cheap now, probably nearly the same as that one on eBay. It won't have manual features, but it will work with your 40D.

And it'll also be a TTL slave in the future :)
