Im going into photography @ university next year so im planning to get an SLR camera. Im also passionate about photography and im one of those people that never go out with out the camera although this camera that i have sucks. It those sony cybershot cameras. This is the first SLR camera im getting. By Budget is 750$ (Camera+Lenses)
Im not sure which one of these two cameras i should get. Any Ideas? XT is cheaper that means i have more options for the lenses.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi 400D
Im looking for a lens suitable for night photography, and another lens that i can shoot landscape shots (sunset and....)
My budget is 750$ so i cant really afford those expensive lenses.
also another for night photography other than tripod do i need to purchase anything else?
Check with the university art department about the requirements for a camera for the class. You might find it will require a film camera. If this is the case, you might want to look for the film camera first.
For lenses, I would encourage you to look for more conventional lenses. Landscapes often mean ultra wide lenses - and for a croped sensor, this means a rather specialized lens. The ultra wide is not as useful in the class where sunsets (nor even landscapes) will be your subjects. Instead look for fast lenses that allow you to have more creative control over the depth of field. A 35mm f/2.0, 50mm f/1.8 and the like.
That said, film is often better for night photography (can handle long exposures without any noise).
You might find an inexpensive light meter could help with getting the exposure right for night photograph (the light meter in the camera body often has trouble with low light levels and can be confused at night). [link] works quite reasonably.
Again, check with the university and see what you need and what is suggested before going out and buying things. You're not about to go out and get random chemistry books before taking a chemistry class and hope that one of them will be the right one.
Im not purchiasng this camera for the university. I already have put aside some money for university. This camera im getting is really for me. I just want to take the camera out with me and take photos. Camera requirement for university is a film camera which im gonna purchase next year.
Im confused if i should get the XT or XTi and also what lenses i should get. Both for Night Photography, Landscape and also a lens that i can take picture of close up objects. Like candles, flowers and etc. Once again this has nothing to do with requirement for the university. This is more for entertainment and my interest.
Yes the 50mm 1.8 or "nifty fifty" is generally inexpensive and is a good lens to have. I've used it for gig photography i.e. in low light situations and it lets quite a bit of light in too. Many people cherish their nifties. Oh if you can stretch to buying the 1.4 you should, but once again, the difference on the end product isn't major whilst the price difference is. Which is a major turn off. Hope that helps. x
You should then also be looking at Canon EOS film bodies and seeing if you like those. Whatever system you buy into, stick with it. Don't buy a Canon digital body and then later go out and pick up an Olympus OM or Canon AE-1 (for example) for film.
Night photography you want a fast lens so you can capture every bit of light. An f/1.4, f/1.8 or f/2.0 lens. Lowest to go there is f/2.8.
For macro, you want a macro lens such as the Canon 105mm f/2.8 macro. Longer lenses are better - they let you have room between the front of the lens and the subject. This helps avoid shadows, provides extra room for lighting (its very hard to do lighting when you have 3 inches between the front of the lens and the subject) and helps avoid scaring insects.
You can go cheap on the macro lens by getting a set of extension tubes which would be used in combination with a fast prime lens (if you got a prime for night photography above ). Much less expensive, but much less versatile.
ok so i decided to get XT instead of the XTi with the standard 50mm 1.8 lens.
Now the only thing that im not sure is what other useful lenses i should get that arent expensive. Specially for night photography. I'm also getting a tripod as its needed for the night shots.
Buy the Canon RC-1 remote if you want to do "night" photography (im assuming you mean long exposures). Best $30 accessory ive bought for my XT. Its been through the washing machine as well, still works.
