I did a casting call through craigs list, myspace etc and got a pretty good group of people who responded. Some of them VERY strange and others very talented and gifted.

One of the strange people sent me his photos a few weeks ago. Just today I get an e-mail that says, word for word, "Hi. What did you think of my pics? Just curious. Do you think I could get parts in movies or TV shows? Or be an extra?"

The guy is not attractive per se...he's a bit overweight and needs new glasses (he's got the nerdy 90s giant glasses going on). But I'm wondering how I should respond...at all? I could ignore him, give him some cheesy advice (everybody can make it!), or tell him the truth about how to improve his pics.

I've never encountered this before.

Omg that's a very delicate situation... maybe you can try to tell the truth while carefully choosing the words you use, like, try to tell a cheesy truth lol

Seriously I don't really know what I would do myself...

I'd probably respond by saying that, while he has a very interesting look, it isn't suitable for any of the roles you currently have available. I certainly wouldn't give him advice on how to "improve" his pics. You never know - he may be perfect for what somebody else is looking for.

I'd also recommend he starts off by being an extra while pursuing his ambition for acting. Would let him see how sets work etc. as it seems he has little if no experience.

Close by wishing him luck in his career.

Hope you have fun with your project.

Thank you so much, this is exactly what I was looking for. It's just weird that he would be asking me, an indie filmmaker that he doesn't even KNOW, about his career >.>

Overweight people with glasses get plenty of roles, including extra unattractive ones. A few are A-list actors. Talent and dedication is what matters, not having a nice picture to email people.

Actually, nice photos can determine if you get a call back or not. His photos were taken in some sort of classroom with a blank look on his face with a bright flash, making him look very plain and "out of it".

He sent me this e-mail AFTER I told him he could meet for an audition-- which he never even addressed. I would have been able to gauge his talent and dedication if he had put his best foot forward and met me face to face. Instead he sends me a message about his photos and chances in the business.

That makes more sense. I interpreted the first post quite a bit differently... in that case, I'll agree with the 'be honest, but not too mean' sentiment.

Yeah that's what I did...told him to make a resume, even if it's just half a page, and get a friend to shoot some nice photos of you in different poses. And that you always start at the bottom no matter what aspect of film making you decide to embark upon. He seemed to take it well, so maybe next time he auditions he'll get somewhere.
