Isn't it kind of counter-intuitive to have to make ASCII art into images before uploading? That doesn't really count as ASCII art, then, does it?

Yes, but it is the same as converting traditional art to a digital image to show it, or CSS preview, etc.
On the Web, it is hard to preserve Ascii art on all browsers, even less when using a specific font.
So all you show is a screen shot of the Ascii art.
Or, perhaps, the text file holding the Ascii art, with an image preview, but the font issue is the same, and the preview is of limited size.

Typeface variability is part of the medium. If you depend on aspects of the typeface that often vary, you aren't doing it right.
