So I recently went to a Renaissance Fair, and got fascinated by sun carving, where you take a glass lens (telescope based, according to the man who worked there) and use it to burn art onto wood, leather, etc. I bought a smaller one and have had fun seeing what I can do with it. :-)

So, my questiong is, anyone hear heard of this before/does it?

The only problem is the sun has to be shining in order to use it. :-/

Sounds hard.

Actually, what I've done so far with it doesn't seem really hard, you just have to be really patient- and keep your hand steady when you're making the marks. :-)

I have heard of sun carving before, but have never tried it myself. I recall seeing an article on it in one of my woodworking magazines a few years ago, I'll have to see if I can dig that up. There is some pyrographic art on dA, but I imagine that most of it has been done using an iron rather than a lens.

Never heard of it but it sounds like alot of fun. I made a snow globe for my girlfriend for christmas and the glass I used burnt a hole through a picture of me ( good thing she doesn't believe in omens! ) and then later on through another picture of something else. The sun is powerful!

Neat, I haven't really done any wood work before, so the topic is still very new to me. :-)

Yeah, I've found it fun to work with so far. :-)

Ouch! Hmm, maybe a different glass is in order? Or maybe keeping it out of the sun? LOL :-) I bought a small leather cover to go over the glass, but I imagine that wouldn't be very practical for a snow globe.

I haven't done very much, mostly just dabbling. I've been lucky enough to work with some amazing woodworkers, though, so I have learned a little bit.

I've never heard of it, but I would definitely be interested in seeing what you come up with!
