Metal bassist right here! I have a cancelled prototype by Parker, (lucky lucky...) it plays like a champ. Not much distinct tone, but I actually discovered half-round strings as a solution. They work wonders for my playing style. I want to get an older rock bass with more bite at some point, mostly for jamming to more punk-ish tunes with a fuckton of overdrive.
I play with fingers for the most part, with some slapping. But I love the "Lemmy strum" picking style as well.
Good to see that some metal bassists still use finger style. I pretty much play every genre of music, in any style, but im mainly alternative and punk. Got a nice little schecter with bright red strings on it, theyre awesome

I know! The bass is my favorite part of music. It's the heart of it. I just get so frustrated with the instrument, because I can't press my fingers hard enough on the strings to get the correct sound without it hurting. Need to build up some callouses, I guess.
My fingers are super strong from bass, though my two knuckles are unproportional to my other two, from walking on the strings. I get hit pretty hard, though when i need an extra boost i just pick. You can try using a pick, at least until you build up the callouses
I like the way it sounds, but I don't really know any different. I like to play and listen to prog rock, but I'm currently playing in a sci-fi musical that features a lot of doo-wop and 80's power ballad influences. I'm comfortable with just about any kind of rock 'n' roll or related genres, though I'd like to be better at jazz bass.
Lol, i hear that. Ive gotten fairly good at slap, but nowhere near Flea, Les Claypool, Victor Wooten, etc... I just wanna be able to take that sound and apply it to alternative music, which is pretty easy because its not that technical, just simple octaves. What do you try to slap to?
A year or more ago I was covering (among other songs) Sam & Dave's "Hold On, I'm Coming" with some band, and that is the one I chose to practice my slapping on. I actually got to a point where I could manage to play that way quite decently, but couldn't be bothered to keep up with it and after a while I reverted to playing it normally
