There are a lot of threads about current J-pop artists on here, but does anybody else listen to Japanese pop, swing, jazz, soul or R&B from the 50's, 60's and 70's? I've noticed Japan had a brilliant soul scene similar to that of the Northern Soul and Carolina Beach Music scenes. Quite fashionable too, much like their English 'mod' counterparts.
"Black Room" by Jun Mayuzumi and "Sunny" by Mieko Hirota would be my favorite songs from this era. Other notable artists include Eiko Shuri, Reiko Ohara, the J Girls, Linda Yamamoto and Mie Nakao.
I'm interested in similar scenes from other parts of the world as well, so feel free to make suggestions.
I'm not familiar with Japanese soul, but Happy End were a pretty decent band from the 70s, and Apryl Fool were a 60s psychedelic band that were't too shabby at all.
