if anything, rock will die first. perhaps followed by EDM, but i'm not the person to say.

the base genre of it is little more than the blues with added chord structures for songs. and half of stuff today under the umbrella of rock is quite as far off from rock as the defining style of rock is from it's parent genres.

Jazz has been around for at least fifty years longer than rock has, and it's still evolving to this day. If anything is going to live in infamy, it's jazz. Rock hasn't changed much since it's creation. Same basic structure, same four instruments, etc. Sure, The Beatles don't sound anything like Morbid Angel, but still, it's like Gearmond said, "the base genre of it is little more than the blues with added chord structures for songs."
:icongearmond:
buuut, just to play the devil's advocate.

let as also focus on how much rock has been changed by doing what jazz has done. incorperating different elements to itself. now, i think its safe to say that VERY few metal bands use the good ol 2-5-1 or 1-4-5 rock/pop structure any more. also, there are a good number of bands in the big umbrella of rock that sound NOTHING like rock save for the instruments used. my example is Primus and most other Claypool related projects.

and jazz has retained its... evolutionary consistancy by decreasing it's number of defining characteristics over the years. it went from syncopated rhythms with swing, improvization, horn section, and rhythm section, that tell a story to syncopated rhythms with swing, improvisation, that tell a story to syncopated rhythms, improvisation, that tell a story, to today where we just have syncopation and improvisation as the defining characteristics of all of jazz (and with some free-jazz artists, syncopation is used quite liberally)

so perhaps the preservation of such genres isn't concerned with what is being played and how it relates to the definition of said genre, but the adaptability and flexability of artist to remain consistant to the genre in one way or another.
