I like punk more, but classic emo is good.

For punk recommendations, the classic stuff is betetr. Check out The Clash, The ramones, Dead Kennedys, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, The Germs, Minor Threat, The Distillers, AFI (anything before sing the sorrow) , Social Distortion, Patti Smith, The Misfits, and Tiger Army (which is more of a punk/psycobilly band)

As for emo, try: Texas is the Reason, Indian Summer, Sunny Day Real Estate, Fugazi (debatable whether this is emo or punk), Rites of Spring, and Embrace. If you like screamo emo, I highly recommend Circle Takes The Square.

Heres how I classify them

Punk:
distorted sound
More shouting
Simple to play
Often political or anti-establishment

Examples: Green Day, Rise Against, Simple Plan

Emo: Clearer sound
Whine not shout
More emotionally sensitive lyrics
darker lyrics

Examples: AFI, My Chemical Romance, Red Jumpuit Apparatus
