What's Happening to Music?!

Well it seems that everyone is enamoured with the new age of music that focuses on hard sounds, rap, screaming stuff, "alternative", and a myriad of other sounds that seem to be cranked out at record breaking speeds...and it all sounds the same. I know I may offend a lot of people here that listen to the stuff, but really this is just a thread to see if there are any out there who can comiserate with me. Remember the days of Frank Sinatra? Ella Fitzgerald? The mowtown era of wonderful MUSICAL talent- as in amazing VOICES, and not the sole reliance on computerized sounds, beats, etc.

It seems like we've almost taken the humanity out of music! There are rappers who might be great "poets" if that's what you call some of the stuff, but really. You have to admit there are a TON of them who have TERRIBLE voices! It's a mockery of music, in my opinion. And no, I am NOT saying "all rap sucks". That's not what I am saying at all.

And the screaming music...is the world really just THAT angsty? Are things SO bad off, you think screaming is a way to "express" yourself?

What I am saying essentially, is I think music is becoming diluted, and washed out- all the same sound, no musical talent to back it up and a COMPLETE underappreciation for the "oldies" or so they are called.

Like the Steve Miller Band, like Queen (my favorite band of all time, hands down), Aerosmith, Red Hot Chili Peppers (Woodstock, people- they're older). WHAT'S HAPPENING TO MUSIC?

And then classic rock!

It depends if it has good lyrics and a badass tune. Then I'm sold.

Chilli Peppers older bass funk works are great and the bassist is from my state too! New stuff is commercial, radio-friendly crap.

Listening to Duran Duran causes cancer.

and it all sounds the same

Then you clearly have not listened to a broad enough amount of music from the past several years, because you are very much wrong. Today's music world is far more varied than it ever has been in the past.

Remember the days of Frank Sinatra? Ella Fitzgerald?

Of course, but those decades of music were not any better or worse than this one.

The mowtown era of wonderful MUSICAL talent- as in amazing VOICES, and not the sole reliance on computerized sounds, beats, etc.

Those "computerized" sounds require more technical know-how than I believe you actually realize, and as much as I dig Motown rarities, the label is hardly an end-all to vocal talent.

It seems like we've almost taken the humanity out of music!

I don't see how that's exactly possible when all music is created by humans...?

There are rappers who might be great "poets" if that's what you call some of the stuff, but really. You have to admit there are a TON of them who have TERRIBLE voices!

That may be true, but for every hip-hop vocalist that is sub-par, there's one that would blow your mind with his/her skill.

Are things SO bad off, you think screaming is a way to "express" yourself?

Hate to break it to you, but screaming is an excellent tool for expression. Would a piece of music such as "Venus and Bacchus" by Saetia honestly have the same effect if you were to strip it of the contrast between harsh vocals and spoken word? I very much doubt it.

What I am saying essentially, is I think music is becoming diluted, and washed out- all the same sound, no musical talent to back it up and a COMPLETE underappreciation for the "oldies" or so they are called.

That is the same bullshit that people have been stating every decade of modern music that has past, and it has yet to have a grain of truth to it. Do yourself a favour and take a look underneath the mainstream fluff. There's a whole other music world below it.

Like the Steve Miller Band, like Queen (my favorite band of all time, hands down), Aerosmith, Red Hot Chili Peppers (Woodstock, people- they're older). WHAT'S HAPPENING TO MUSIC?

Well, I wish I could say it had gotten past the mediocrity of those groups.

And then classic rock!

What about it? I know I and most here will have nothing particularly positive to say on that topic.

Well it seems that everyone is enamoured with the new age of music that focuses on hard sounds, rap, screaming stuff, "alternative", and a myriad of other sounds that seem to be cranked out at record breaking speeds

So all modern music is made up of hard rock and violent hip-hop? Or do you just mean what makes it to the media (which is less than 3% of all the music out there)?

Remember the days of Frank Sinatra? Ella Fitzgerald?

Oh, I suppose you do. And that's a really idiotic question to ask in a forum made up mostly of kids under twenty.

The mowtown era of wonderful MUSICAL talent- as in amazing VOICES, and not the sole reliance on computerized sounds, beats, etc.

So, you're saying that musical talent comes from how well you can sing/preform instruments? That's kind of like saying being a great author is all about how pretty your handwriting is. I don't undermine computer musicians anymore than an author who uses MicrosoftWord over pen and paper. Technology is helping musicians out in more ways than ever before, not just in electronica or hip-hop. You would be pretty hard pressed to find any modern musician that doesn't use the help of electronics to improve on his/her music. And have you any idea what it takes to be an electronic (drum and bass, techno, etc) musician? The programs used are very technical and demanding. And again, their music is just as valid and respectable as any other form, because again, great music isn't about how well you can play something.

Saying that all the humanity has been taken out of music is a pretty extreme statement to make just because there's some shitty hip-hop out there.

And the screaming music...is the world really just THAT angsty? Are things SO bad off, you think screaming is a way to "express" yourself?

I don't know how many times I have to say this, but anger is just as valid and important an emotion in music as any other. Anger isn't an evil or stupid emotion. It's often quite necessary, and using music as a way of venting is nothing to look down upon. There's so much shit in politics and modern society that pisses me off, and I have nothing but respect for bands like Napalm Death that have created an art that truly speaks to me and allows me to punch an audio pillow. Or do you think all music should be fluffy melodica about how great the world is and how there's nothing wrong with anything?

If you don't like it, then don't listen to it. There, that was fast.

All I have to say is that you're pretty small minded to take such respect in something just because it's "classic", a word used to describe something others besides you, long ago, called magnificent. I'll keep my dignity and make my own judgment of what makes great music, and I say that the likes of electronic musicians such as Squarepusher, Prometheus, and Dabyre outstrip anything Ella or Frank have shat out.

Welcome to the music forum.

Most of those bands you listed are horribly shallow pop acts with all the dept of a reflective pool.
