I know this is a little past the point, but can I comment on how surprised I was to find that Downtown Abbey won? I mean, obviously they had to have a decent fan-base to be nominated, but against Doctor Who or even Sherlock, I doubted they'd win.
I was vying for Merlin, for the obvious reason of it being the last season and also the best to date. 5x13 had me in tears and laughter and just all around, a giant hot mess.
Merlin. I have watched all of the TV-shows except for Doctor Who, and I have to say Merlin wins big time for me! The humor mixed with all the drama and darkness are in a perfect mix, even if I'm still sad over the ending of the show. 5x13 was so sad!!! But yes, one of the best shows I've ever watched- even if Sherlock is a great show too.
And no, I didn't vote- I'm from Sweden, so I can't vote in a program from Britain.
I'm not British, so I'm not sure if I'm suppose to vote. But if I could vote, I'd vote Sherlock. I've seen all the shows you've detailed, with the exception of the second season of Downtown Abbey. The first season was ok, but in my opinion, over hyped. Merlin is the best its ever been, the show has grown. Doctor Who is always a favorite of mine, and while I'm glad to see the show getting recognition, Sherlock simply won me over.
Doctor Who: No, because the writing has been confusing and fairly awful at times. Downtown Abbey: Hasn't this show been going on for...eons? No wait, I'm thinking of Coronation Street. Sherlock: I've not taken the time to watch it, but apparently people like it. Merlin: Or this.
I think the first of the modern doctor who were the best. Most of tennant was good but eventually now they have ran out of ideas and it looks a bit more like they are milking it. It reminds me of eastenders and corrie how they are now making the plots more extreme to try and keep viewers.
