I have no taste for films that have "pop-up horror". Ones that make you think and cringe are the best. My favorite is The Others with Nicole Kidman. The Evil Dead coming out in theaters soon looks good too. Honorable mentions are: The Exorcist, and the original The Thing.

The Others is a very remarkable film from more than just one viewpoint. In an era where you can only impress young horror fanatics with bucket-loads of blood and gross-out effects, this movie actually re-teaches his audience that fear is especially caused by suggestion and the absence of explicit images. The Others is the first intelligent horror film in years, completely relying on atmosphere and eerie set pieces. It's such a relief to finally see a subtle film that is also effective! The acting is great, the plot actually scares you and the directing is solid. The Others is a total winner
It's a great movie and i recommendit to any horror movie enthusiast.

Welp, check these really scary horror movies out if you can (since no-one's listed them yet):
>The Orphanage/El Orfanato
>Suspiria
>Let Me In Or "Let The Right One In", since some dislike Americanized stuff
>Videodrome
>Lars Von Tier's "Antichrist" (has genital mutilation)
>Jack Ketchum's "The Girl Next Door" (same as above)

Though if you're the type that's probably thought: "Gore, blood, mutilated genitals, this stuff's getting old. I'm not afraid of ANYTHING anymore!", well... congrats!

You can now personally enjoy *filth, exercising real animal cruelty, human depravity, excrement and degradation... right in the comfort of your own home:
(most films are alleged 'snuff' + warning-- be careful watching these films in Australia, New Zealand, Britain, or other countries that ban films: you could get caught, and fined. Oh, and some are have no sense in screen-time = potentially boring most of the time.)
*subjective; depending on your POV

August Underground's Mordum
August Underground's Penance (for AU films: genital mutilation + see Serbian film warning)
Vomit Gore Freaks
Guinea Pig 2: Flowers of Blood And Flesh
Melancholie Der Engel
Cannibal Holocaust (animals killed for film)
A Serbian Film (contains incest, necrophilia, paedophilia, 'newborn porn' dafuq)
The Green Elephant (free to watch-- I dare you)
Vaces Des Noces (otherwise known as the 'Pig F***ing Movie') obvious bestiality and did I mention drinking piss and coprophagia?
Philosophy Of A Knife
L.A. Zombie (pornographic zombie violence + homophobes be warned)
Visitor Q (not really horror, but included for almost every single taboo + lactation)
Banned In America/Traces Of Death (contains real footage of death)

Not a sicko or anything, but I probably spent waaay too much time studying disturbing crap for New Zealand's "Censor For A Day" + too much time on IMDb.
BTW, the real horror is not just the fact these films were created, but the fact you watched them (if you did)!

Just watch Audition.

We watched it in a horror writing class. It was so scary that a few people left class when it got really gruesome.

Look no further than Shutter. Not Shutter Island, but Shutter. For maximum horror, watch the Thai original.
The Eye - original Japanese version.
Midnight Meat Train.
KM 31 - Mexican horror movie.
Rec - Spanish horror movie.

There you go, some international flavors of horror. 8-)

I watched MMT a while ago and overall it's a simple, bloody, hardcore offering certain satisfaction. The movie is a refreshing, fast, brutal affair that won't disappoint (for those that want to see it). The worst thing a horror film can be is boring, and Midnight Meat Train is never dull. Neither is it quite as exciting or tense as would be ideal. I tried not to give any spoilers for those that want to see it.

After i watch the other movies you posted i'll tell my opinion. If any other movie pops in mind don't forget to tell.

I am glad that you enjoyed MMT. Let me know when you watch any of my recommendations; I'm curious to know. Shutter, especially. That remains to be one of the most enjoyable thriller I've seen. Just disturbing.

Thanx for the list !

I have seen shaun of the dead and is quite a surprising and brilliant piece of work it's a romantic comedy with zombies who appear for no good clear reason (although some clues are offered). The film is an amazing blend of the funny, the violent and the poignant. If anybody else wants to watch it i highly sudgest it.

I'll write my opinion for the other movies once i watch them. If anything else pops in mind don't forget to tell.

I don't watch very many horror movies, but the ones I see are usually more distinctive than usual. Off the top of my head, some others are:
Cronos, completely unique vampire movie -- really! Not even close to the Twilight franchise...or anything you ever saw before.
Do you count Pan's Labyrinth as horror or fantasy? It's a little of both...
Les Revenants, aka They Came Back (2004), also thoroughly unique! Leave it to the French to create a deep, meaningful zombie movie, albeit one whose ending baffled me.
I assumed you already saw The Sixth Sense. If not, then first watch Jacob's Ladder, an imperfect but ambitious movie with a solid cast and some intriguing imagery...

Once you see a few of them and post your thoughts, I'll hopefully do a better job of suggesting titles you'd enjoy...

Well said! I have watched it many times and ***SPOILER ALERT *** enjoyed seeing first through the eyes of the unseen others, and then as a family drama, and it works on every level I choose. As you say, the scares are not gory, which is a major change from most horror movies.
If only they'd release Paperhouse, you would have a second movie with a unique perspective and no real gore. Alas, it's not been seen in over a decade!

Very unusual fantasy with some truly terrifying moments. Despite the fact that this is about a teenage girl and has a PG-13 rating, this is NOT for children. Also, if you hate fantasies stay far away. But if you're game for something different this fits the bill.
Well directed by Bernard Rose with a just beautiful music score and a few nice, scary jolts. The only thing that prevents this from being a really great movie is Burke--she's not a very good actress (it's no surprise that this has been her only film) and it hurts the movie. However, everybody else is just great.
Spiers is very good as Mark; Glenne Headley (faking a British accent very well) is also very good as Anna's mother and Ben Cross is both frightening and sympathetic as Anna's father.
Even though it's a pretty obscure movie, i highly recommend it.

Depends on your preferences I suppose. I'm not a fan of American shock horror and prefer Asian psychological horror movies.

If you are in the mood for something different I suggest:

Noroi
Rampo Noir
The Eye
A Tale of Two Sisters

There are many more, but these are the ones that stood out in my mind going through a few lists.
