What exactly SO special about anime, that it stands out from other form of animation?

:iconmachtornado13:
No this is not a rant against anime, it's just a question on what makes it so special. Anyway, what makes anime SO much better and superior to other forms of animation out there? Anime isn't bad or anything, but it isn't perfect. It's becoming too mainstream nowadays, the animation is mostly choppy and low key frames, some people (like me) find the art stlye to be overused, and sometimes the plot confuses me. Don't say I'm racist because I don't praise anime as the best thing ever, as it is only some minor complaints, as I also have it for other forms of animation. Anyway, what EXACTLY makes it stand out from the crowd from all other types of animation. The sheer content? The art stlye (you'll either love it or hate it, I guarantee)? The character development that goes on in alot of anime? Or is it just simply because of nostalgia for shows such as Dragonball, Pokemon, Sailor Moon etc. Please leave an answer in the comments, and I will RAGE if you turn this into a "anime is sooo much better than american cartoons" flame war. So yeah.

South Park and Futurama > Every anime in existance. And why do you like to see drawn lines and find that attractive? And implying that anime kid shows are of high quality too, lol.

I dont like south park if futurama. Their horrible attempts at humour disgust me.
And I've always hated south park's animation style

I find drawn lines attractive because I dont find real people attractive. Simple

Dude, this thread needs to die soon. May this be the last post on it since there are so many points flying in so many directions. Let me try to summarize things the best way I can.

Anime is to the East what the movie industry is to the West. A better analogy would that anime is to the small screen what movies are to the big screen, but since the internet is slowly rendering television senile, I'll avoid this. It's versatile. It's artistic. And it hosts a lot of crap. just like the movie industry.

Both anime and movies have a variety of artistic techniques. They can tackle complex symbolism, as well as dumb itself down to just showing tits. If anime has hentai then movies have porn. It's versatile that way.

Anime cannot be generalized in terms of story. The works of Satoshi Kon (Paranoia Agent, Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, and the like) are vastly different to the mindless, mediocre, "high-action" shounen works (Naruto, Bleach, Katekyo Hitman Reborn). And if you think that it's just anime that have mediocre action stories then you obviously forgot Transformers 2 and 3, as well as my new favorite punching bag, Total Recall.

Anime is also sports a lot of variation in art. The avant-garde style of the Monogatari series, the hand-drawn brilliance of Redline, the cartoon styling of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, and the supreme over-all beauty of Fate/Zero showcase the wide range of artistic animation that really defines anime. And if you're thinking about the generic features of anime (gigantic eyes, over-stylized hair, and a nose-less face) then you need to see more anime, because they really make put an effort into artistic variety.

Anime appeals to a large audience. They can range to ones aimed for kids (Card Captor Sakura, Pokemon, Angelic Layer), to ones aimed to hopeless geeks who could care less for quality and instead go for over-the-top cuteness (K-ON) and panty flashing (Ikki Tousen), to the maturer audience (Mushi-shi, Monster, Baccano!, Akira, Ghost in the Shell), to the more easy-going audience (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, iDOLM@STER, Cowboy Bebop, Azumanga Diaoh), to the audience who would kill to protect their beloved series (Neon Genesis Evangelion). This vast audience is also present in the movie industry. I've met a Star Wars fan who punched me for calling the Phantom Menace a let down. Talk about obsessed.

Just as movies adapt other art works (Watchmen, Gone with the Wind, The Great Gatsby, Les Miserables), anime does the same (Gankutsuou, Rurouni Kenshin, Sword Art Online). It takes other art works (mainly manga and light novels) and turns them into anime. This is not always the case though, since their are works which are made without any original source material to base from (Gurren Lagann), which is also done in movies.

To cap this all off, anime is an artistic mode of presentation, just like movies. There are a lot of shitty works in anime, but that shouldn't define how the public looks at it, since every other art form (visual art, movies, music, literature) is decked with crap as well. Only 2% of all works (according to Sturgeon's Law) is actually good, so let's base anime for its 2%, just like we do with all other art forms.

Didactic time: Please, don't beat on anime. Generic and mediocre anime are produced because they sell well in Japan. The anime industry needs its funding so they resort to this, even though they're trying to experiment more to cater to the Western audience. And if the majority of the Western audience responds to them with indifference or derision, even though they're trying to experiment, then they'll just crawl back to their mainland and continue producing the same mediocre, formulated anime that sells there over and over and over again. The hate won't solve shit. Let's end this. Let this flame-war instigating thread die in peace.

I get the feeling OP is trying to look like he doesn't hate anime, but he clearly has some spite over it of some form or another >_>

I neither agree nor disagree with this. I actually just want this thread to die. It's not doing any good for fans or haters.

I can't speak for everyone but I like anime over "most" western animation cause the story and plots are more interesting. I love western cartoons and animation but I just like anime a bit more. As for the animation, yeah some anime have real cheap animation but there's a lot of western animation that even cheaper. Also, anime seem to apparel to different people, while most western animation is made of children, or just collage humor.

Well of course it's not perfect. Nothing is.

To me, the appeal of anime is its unique artstyle and more diversity compared to western animation.
