Respectable Female Characters In Gaming?

Rarezen's avatar
What are some examples of likeable, but respectable female characters in the gaming world and what makes them so great?

Some day when I dive into the game development business I want to create an awesome female lead that will satisfy everyone so any answer helps! :happybounce:

...except Samus and Lara Croft. I know who they are already.

Alyx Vance from Half Life 2! She's useful to the gameplay, an important part of the story, and not sexualized.

Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite
It's one big escort mission but she doesn't go and wander off into the bullet storm and she helps you by giving you health, ammo and all that good stuff.
The voice acting also suits the game perfectly. She is sweet as Elizabeth from Infinite but in the Buried at Sea DLC she has a way darker tone to it
And cool powers and such is not so bad as well

Only answer I have is Clementine from TWD, that girl is so hardcore

Like Clem Epic face

Ellie from TLOU! Definitely Ellie!
Lightning from ff XIII
Clementine form TWD
...Maybe Liara from Mass Effect, if you will (if you can call her female...)

Why: They are not helpless, they are not there to simply satisfy the male gaze and they have actually a personality and potential for further character development

Cassandra from Dragon Age Inquisition. :]

Resident Evil has some pretty awesome female characters as well, like Claire Redfield and and Jill Valentine. I've only played the games up to Code Veronica though!

To be honest, I haven't played many games with female leads that I liked or female characters that were meant to 'stand out' so to speak.

Having said that, there are a few memorable female characters from games with male leads I have played that made an impression on me.

Kiera from Jak and Daxter for example, yes she is a bit scantily clad, but she was an engineer! Without her they literally would have had to stay in Sandover Village.. Or be burned by lava.

[Spoiler Alert if you've never played BioShock]
Women in BioShock were scientists and innovators. Tannenbaum, probably the only woman that didn't die or turn into a splicer, was in the process of a rebellion almost. With out her trying to rescue the little sisters, it would have been ridiculous trying to defeat Atlas! (Fyi, haven't played the story where you harvest them)

And let's not forget the witch from Dishonored. She was all BUT helpless.

Often times a change in perspective is all that's needed to see what could be. Maybe remember some characters of this sort, and think of what their story would be if they had been designed as a PC. Put them in the shoes of the current lead character. What would it be like? Endless possibilities!

I am all about human equality, whether we are writing games, climbing the corporate ladder, or making our own choices despite socially acceptable norms.

I understand that the way women have been portrayed in gaming hasn't been the greatest, especially leads, but I have been excited by the progress that's been made and am looking forward to what future writers, male or female, create to portray the tenacity of human beings.

...Yep.

Sorry for the book I just wrote, lol. I'm sure your game will be awesome!!! Go for it!

A lot of Final Fantasy girls, tbh. Kairi, regardless of her lack of character development, in kh2 was really respectable near the ending.
Also Shiki from The World Ends With You, because she's so real and easy to relate too. as well as most of the fire emblem girls because they're pretty and can kick ass 8D

I have to say Claire Redfield and Jill Valentine from Resident Evil. And Aveline Vallen and Isabela from Dragon Age.

Yes, she is badass xD

I also forgot to mention Saya from Saya no Uta...

Shantae; she is cute and badass, but modest.

Skyrim has a few such good characters, like Mjoll the Lioness, Astrid of the Dark Brotherhood, Aela the Huntress, Uthgerd the Unbroken, Karliah of the Thieves' Guild, Frea of the Skaal, and so on and so forth. Little to no emphasis is put on their sex at all, and they are strong fighters in their own right, each with their own unique stories and beliefs."

"We Skaal do not fear death. We know we will return to the All-Maker and be born anew. Life never truly ends. Death is just a passage from one form to the next." - Frea

"It's been difficult, I've taken the burdens of this city's problems upon myself and I keep running into impossible obstacles. Corruption, lies and deceit are the order of the day here. If it wasn't for Aerin, the young man who saved my life, I think I'd already have given up long ago." - Mjoll

"My mother was a Companion. And her mother. And all the women in my family, back to Hrotti Blackblade. I stayed with my father in the woods until I was old enough for my Trial. We hunted everything there was to hunt... Good training. Ma didn't live long enough to see me join, but I fight to honor her and all my Shield-Sisters through time." - Aela

"We may be Nightingales, but in our hearts we're still thieves and we're damn good at what we do." - Karliah

Have you seen Mortal Kombat X? In an interview with Ed Boon, he said he wanted to make women more realistic than sexist. Cassie Cage for me is one of the first female fighters to represent real girl power. I mean.... she's like the main character of story mode, she's the last chapter, her friend Jacqui is before her and also a good symbol, Cassie is independent, I think she has funny Fatalities, nice personality and she's the one who officially saved the Earth from the hands of Shinnok. Oh and I just cant' forget to tell her father, a man, is the damsel in distress and she follows her mother's steps. So I guess MK has my respect. More than Tekken 7 that's trying to become a DoA and never left the comfort zone.

However, Tekken 7 is one fo the first to feature mothers as fighters and even final Bosses. I mean... that's a taboo being broken here. We never though about beating a mother.... XD

Another fighting game no one knows is Power Instinct. It goes beyond Tekken and features old women as protagonists and even bosses. That's another thing to think...why always young women?

Other female I like if Faith. She's the protagonist, she doesn't have watermellons, big butts, she doesn't scream like a porn star (Cassie doesn't too :D), her rival is a woman and her enemies are male.

Let's see..... I kinda liked the new Claire Redfield from RE Revelations 2. She has more clothes, has more realistic body shape and still, looks pretty. :3

Shion from Xenosaga. She just does her own thing the whole time, she wears all her clothes, and she's a bit of a geek but still pretty badass.
