Mass Effect 4: Expectations and how you would make it actually good

So it isn't a secret that Bioware is going to make a 4th Mass Effect game. I haven't read up too much on it but I know that it's a thing

I fully expect them to mess it up in some way. I'm expecting the dialogue wheel to play even less of a role in the game, with combat being the sole purpose of the game. RPG elements will probably be pushed away quite harshly.

My ideal Mass Effect 4 would feature a protagonist whose race you can choose (of course Bioware would never do this because they wouldn't get multiple voice actors to do all the lines for the main character). The story would be fairly contained and the protagonist would be someone who is not known by everyone as a hero, but still has interesting things to do. The dialogue wheel will have the middle option available again and it won't break your game if you choose it multiple times. I know that the paragon/renegade meters are iconic in this series, but it's a really crap system. The dialogue options you choose will still have an impact on the story but it won't need invisible points in order to work. I have other ideas but I'm sure you guys have stopped reading by now

So tell me what you think Mass Effect 4 will be like, and how you would like it to be like

Well seeing as they said they don't want the typical "soldier-type main protagonist" I don't know what they'll do. I imagine the game would be a little more open world now.

I was fine with the Mass Effect 3, and I only found as a defect that it was way, way too short. If the new team who takes care now of the game manage to fix that in Mass Effect 4, and give it a gameplay time equal to Skyrim's play time, well then, it would be great. I prefer to keep seeing the RPG elements, otherwise it's gonna be boring.

Yeah I also want more sidequests that actually mean something, not stupid quests to fetch random people their socks on the citadel.

I heard the new team is the same team who worked on ME 3's multiplayer, soooooooo

Not sure if that's 100% true but that's what I heard

In short, here's what I think they should do with a future Mass Effect game, if at least from a gameplay standpoint: [link]

There. Now everyone's issues are solved and we get a new triple hybrid (RPG, turn-based strategy, shooter) genre, and user generated content to boot. It wouldn't even be that hard to accomplish.

I don't mind the shooting, I just don't like the shooting taking over and being the main point of the game

I can agree to that, but some people get to the extreme point of suggesting that Mass Effect 1's combat was better because it was basically "point in general vicinity of enemies, kill them, move on to exploration area".

I liked Mass Effect 1's combat simply because it allowed me to make a shotgun that literally spit hellfire

...and I generally was bored with it because it provided no challenge whatsoever. I want my games to be engaging -and- challenging. Mass Effect 1's mechanics were an unfinished experiment about trying to hybrid KotOR with a third person shooter. Earlier builds of the game even showed the ability to switch party members like in KotOR. However, their final product was far from substantial. I wouldn't say Mass Effect 2-3 is the solution though -- something more like Warframe or a more RPG styled version of Syndicate would make more sense for an FPS/RPG hybrid set in the Mass Effect universe.

I'm really just interested in the Mass Effect universe, so I don't think I'd really mind a genre change. It'd be quite fresh for the series

...really? Because some of your responses to other people seem to be of the rather stereotypical "grr, it's just a shooter now, grr!"

Not trying to accuse, just a bit surprised.

Mass Effect 4 should be a continuation of what happens in ME3 based around the fact Sheppard was hallucinating in ME3 and the Reapers were killed off by the combined efforts of the the alliance and/or the Leviathans.

I hope they don't really call it ME4, the fourth part to the epic three-part trilogy, doesn't really roll off the tongue.

This. Mass Effect has been suffering from an identity crisis since the second game. It isn't even a RPG/Shooter hybrid anymore.

I think the biggest mistake they made is that they lost the initial vision they had for the game and instead decided to try and give people what they wanted.

Makes my ire over not getting a new jade empire not seem so bad, i would hate to see the same thing happen there.

I think the morality system is to keep your character in balance, and not bipolar. Can you imagine Shepard being super paragon and then super renegade?

"Stop fighting the geth dammit! You need to let things go! You're both going to die!"

"Yeah, Tali go back to your homeworld, you don't belong on the Normandy..."

Shepard's character would be all over the place and you would have fucked yourself. (the npcs would not react very realistically to you, either)
But anyway, I want a first contact war prequel. Or maybe a sequel that backs up the indoctrination theory and lets us finish the fight...but I prefer to think that it was all real and that Shepard retired with their LI.

All I wanted from the system was a way for a paragade Shepard to be able to have all their crew survive in Mass Effect 2 :<

I imagine that the end of the 3rd game saw the defeat of the reapers through conventional means, because why the fuck not

I'm interested in the first contact war. Maybe choose which side your character is on

I don't actually see how dialogue options could play a major role without the Morality system.

It punishes players who aren't a complete saint or aren't a complete asshole. The game should just keep track of what the character said in a certain situation and remember it for later

Hopefully, it'll be a bit smaller scale than the main trilogy. I liked the whole "save the galaxy from the Reapers" thing but I'd like a smaller, more concise story next.

I want 4 to be a Mass Effect themed exercise game for Kinect where the premise is that you're training for the ultimate save the universe battle and you get to pick your fav. crew member as your personal trainer and get to have sexy tiemz with them each time you reach a goal. Also, instead of "Kinect Pause", the voice command for a short break in that game should be: "Can it wait for a bit? I'm in the middle of some calibrations."

Yes. I would buy that.

First I'd like it not to be called Mass Effect 4, it just has a bad ring to it.
Mass effect has an interesting universe, and another sequel is a good time to build on it. I'd like to see more variation in alien designs(maybe even an evolution of the Hanar , more 'alien' planets.

The game would have to be a sequel. A prequel would be a cheap move.
GAMEPLAY- same as always. But you'll be able to command a ship with the dialogue wheel. The battles will be semi-turn based, with you the captain barking orders to your crew while they control various areas of the ship.

STORY You are a civilian who survived the reapers (A human on Earth most likely)
You join a salvage team under another captain. Helping to rebuild the galaxy by delivering things and killing rogue mercenaries.
You eventually get your own crew and take control of a Reaper (either reverse engineered or other).
ME3 ENDING CHANGES

Destroy- One mission could see you deliver Shepard's body to one of the ME3 characters such as Liara or Joker.
The world is more of a wild west with a Broken citadel alliance desperately trying to keep the peace.
Mercenaries become the main antagonists.

Control- The Reapers are obedient and helpful. Many different factions have taken control of their own Reapers which has lead to tension and a cold war front.
It would be fitting for a new Cerberus to rise up with their own Reapers here.

Synthesis- I'll be stretching worse than the original ending for this one, having universal telepathy and understanding doesn't leave much room for conflict- A Reaper asks to join up with you? So harbinger or something is your new EDI?
Maybe when someone is killed they can be resurrected if they've stored their memories in greyboxes, leading a few people to be more reckless? Or I guess the yahg could start spreading across the galaxy and cause trouble on a larger scale than the batarians.
(with the hybrid DNA failing to inhibit their aggressive traits, it is untested after all).
So... yahg are the main antagonists, since the synthesis gives them the ability to spread across the galaxy before they've evolved their society.

And for the ending of ME4? Maybe something big starts a galactic civil war, and your choices decide which side of it you're on (if you do choose a side).

Also fire Casey Hudson. He makes Motomu Toriyama or Peter Molyneux look like Keiji Inafune and Warren Spector in comparison.
