One of the nicer Christmas prezzies I got was Medal of Honor: Allied Assault Warchest from GoG.com It reminded me of how MoH used to be such a great series, but then an imitator came up from behind and took the crown, because EA was too busy resting on its laurels. Then when it tried to make a comeback, it was pegged as a piss-poor imitation of the series that outshone it.
Makes me think of how Alone in the Dark went from being the original Survival Horror genre, to becoming a very pale Resident Evil imitator.
Its a change or die industry. Its why JRPGs are floundering so hard outside of Japan. The modern RPG gamer wants choices, replay value, a story that shapes itself around their actions. Hell, with the new Fallout games, even the ending is customized to what you did, who you talked to, and how you treated them!
And your still stuck playing as someone else's character. To me that is about as fun as playing D&D, but being relegated to a tiny selection of pre rolled characters.
Firstly, you didn't really mention customizing your character. Secondly, I guess you wouldn't enjoy Planescape: Torment, Deus Ex, and The Witcher as well.
