Great run n' gun shooters.

What are some of the absolute BEST run and gun shooters you've ever played? In other words, what're your favorites? Metal Slug X and 3 are two of my favorites in this awesome genre. Unfortunately, I've never played a Contra game in my life. But I have played Gunstar Super Heroes, which was a semi-remake of Gunstar Heroes, which was inspired by Contra.

I only played it for about an hour at my cousin's house but I really liked Dead Nation.
But it depends on what kind of perspective you like more.

I loved the hell out of all of the Metal Slug games...In fact, I may just draw some fan art of it sometime soon.

Run-n-gun? Like side-scrolling? If that's the case then all of the MetalSlugs! If any run and gun then I'd have to say Borderlands 2!

Megaman and Megaman X games are all fantastic. Megaman 3 and 4 were my favorites.
I do enjoy a good Metal Slug as well.

Those are first-person shooters. I'm talking about 2d run and gun shooters "shmups".

Rapid Reload is one of my favorite run n' gun games. It's an old obscure PS1 game that was only released in Europe and Japan.... so unless you're keen on importing games, the only way to play it is to use an emulator, but even so, it's awesome!

Play Contra. Please. And I recommend 4 or Hard Corps for the most variety and replay value.

I'm certainly not getting Hard Corps. It's WAAY too hard and I'm not even sure it's on the virtual console.

It is on VC and it really isn't that hard, honestly. Hard is Shattered Soldier on PS2 or Hard Corps UPRISING for Xbox and PS3.

If it's limited to 2D games I'm pretty much outta here, but if it's NOT then I'll stay.
Beyond the usual suspects of Doom 1 and 2 and the first Quake games, Painkiller is one of the best 'classic' styled ego-perspective-shoot-em-ups that exists. great weapon- and enemy-design, really cool leveldesign and a goddamn great gameplay.

i wouldn't call contra a run n' gun as you call it. i tried that in the original contra and i died very quickly. is this only limited to 2d games? if so then metal slug really is one of the only ones that come to mind. however megaman zero 4 i think it was came pretty close when you had weapons fully upgraded. alot of the areas i could run n'gun.

if 3d games count to then id have to add the original quake games to that list and the unreal tournament games.

I want only 2d run n' gun shmups. I can see why you thought of Quake and Unreal Trn., but I'm not looking for 3d games or FPSs.

I've seen gameplay of it on Youtube. If you've heard of Turrican, Gunlord is pretty much a clone of it.

Never played Turrican, don't have a Dreamcast, will not be getting Gunlord. But it does look pretty good.:)
