Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening: Evil Eagle can't be beat

I'm having trouble defeating the boss on Eagle Tower. Keeping in mind, I don't have the level 2 sword. I hit him about 50 times and still he doesn't go down. Does anyone know any other way to kill this damn bird?

If you don't have the Level 2 Sword, try using the Hook Shot.

Best way is to make sure you don't fall down from the tower, or else you have to start all over again.
Use the hook shot to hit the boss as often as you can, and make sure you keep walking the other way when he blows feathers on you - while guarding for the feathers.
It's a bit tricky and you've got to have patience if you don't have the level 2 sword, and the hook shot will only be damaging if you hit the eagle's head - so make sure that you time it well.
Six hits with the hook shot should take care of the boss.
