Your Favourite Master of Orion/OrionII Strategy?

When I play Master of Orion or the sequel, the strategy I employ is to build up my defenses and a good, strong fleet, though I often like to(in the original game) build up the factories and technology as quickly as possible. I avoid being the aggressor, though in the original game I will often try to incite revolutions just to destabilize other empires. In the sequel, I generally don't spy unless my empire or one of the others has the 'repulsive' trait. Mostly, I basically just do like Roosevelt - 'Speak softly and carry a big stick'.

Telepathy is especially cool since I don't need to invade unless my opponent is telepathic, and usually I play with the Elerian portrait so none of my other opponents are telepathic unless I'm using a mod. And one of my favourite species in the original is the Bulrathi, because it's REALLY hard to invade their planets. The bears have a ground combat bonus, but are weak with computers. To compensate, I just spend a lot on research in the beginning for a leg-up. The Darloks are awesome too, and it's a hoot to watch the havoc they can wreak on the entire sector. One time when I played as the Darloks, I had everyone all the other empires at each others' throats, and I think a few got decimated.

When I'm playing either game, and some race declares war on me(often for not giving into their demands), then if they invade one of my planets, I'll send my fleet there, destroy their fleet, and if I can, re-take the planet. Then I'll send my ships straight for their closest planet. When my ships get close to their homeworlds, they'll often contact me begging for mercy.

Which strategy do you like to use?

A friend of mine just keeps threatening people who don't have fleets because the computer gives into demands way too easily. Then when he's done, he's too busy blowing up planets and reforming them, changing around the entire population of enemies, to care what happens after that. But after enough turns he'll conquer every planet but one, then surrender to it and get the high score.

That's a weird strategy, but effective for getting points.

The high score caps out at something otherwise, but because of the incredible time spent and the loss combined the time spent "surviving" adds up really super fast.

I can't say I have a strat because my playthrough ended quickly with no time to learn the game, however I enjoyed watching GetDaved's LP of it on youtube. His strat is sort of ...well he could be easily beaten if the enemy attacks before he gets to a certain development stage.

It's sort of hard to explain, he goes with low numbers of strong ships, he did 3 LPs so I can't say which is his "main" but it was interesting and a good watch none the less.

Ah. Well, I hope you find a good strategy sometime. Those first two Orion games are loads of fun, aren't they?

I've only really been through full missions via LP, I just can't wrap my head around them nor do I have the time. But they are really something else, well polished games that are somewhat seeing a revival with games like Endless Space.
