Trying to understand the logic behind DQX.

The Wii has been a sales juggernaut, so it made sense that S-E announced that Dragon Quest X would be a Wii game. Big selling franchise on a big selling console. I'm still with you so far.
Then years drag on, and the Wii enters it's twilight. They choose now to release DQX, and its an MMORPG.

...huh? Afraid I just don't understand where they are going with that. MMOs are high maintenance, and require a steady stream of income to stay afloat. So releasing one on a console that is about six or so months away from being put out to pasture makes zero sense to me.

The Wii enters its twilight?

I declared it dead at the announcement of the Wii-U.

Twilight in terms of software support, and I claimed it dead when the 3DS was announced.

Oh, in terms of software support, it died ages ago in the digital market.

Not sure why I remember this, but it will be on Wii U as well.

Not every one upgrades consoles at every chance they get. Also, the game is releasing for the Wii U as well, which supposedly plays on the same network as the Wii so it's not like they'll need separate teams to handle the maintenance for each system.

I've never heard of it, but the series appears to be very popular and sales/subs will likely be enough to at least break even.

Well in the west, the series was called "Dragon Warrior" for several years, due to an already existing table-top game called "Dragon Quest".

I think they're counting on the Japanese fanbase that will buy anything Dragon Quest related and will probably sink money into this game for years. I don't know if that will be enough to keep the game alive or not though.

Well, Nintendo threw the Wii user base under the bus, when the 3DS was announced, so I don't see Nintendo keeping the servers going.
